I had my oil changed at 5000 miles (paid out of pocket). Do I have to stick strictly to the 10K mark for my first dealer-paid oil change or can I stretch it to 12K or so?

Has anyone had any experience with this issue??

Thanks in advance!

Well if you disreguard the 10K limit for your own reasons I ask why are you wondering others thoughts?

I agree with you, just saying that if the first 5K needed an oil change, then perhapse every 5K ought to have one.

Got to baby your Mini I feel.....at least from the maintanence perspective, or she'll never handle the driving abuse you may inflict on her.

That reminds me.... I need to do mine...

got an oil change on my MC at 5K just as a precaution. they checked things out and made sure all was ok. I then got the scheduled chagne at 9000 Mi (I do mostly city driving, so the car's gague told me to come in earlier) I say obey what the car tells you. If the car says get the check up at 10K, then do it! Hopefully, the did not reset your counter when you got the oil change.

Good luck!

>>That's sort of my point. Because the counter is NOT reset at the 5000 mark for those of us do get the earlier oil change, the car DOESN"T KNOW it got one. My question has more to do with the official BMW policy than what is best for the car.

Does BMW/MINI require the free oil change be at 10,000 or are they willing to wait til 12K or so?

Any oil change that isn't done when the car says so won't be covered by your warranty. If you wait 2k miles after the computer says to get the change done your dealer can (and most probably will) charge you for it.

Also keep in mind, per the car (and your service policy) the first change is at approx 10k, the second change is approx 15k AFTER the first change.

Depends how you drive, the computer knows and will adjust your mileage before next oil change to anywhere between about 9000 miles (lots of city and hard driving) to 12,000 for most of the rest of us.

Changed oil at 5000? Yes change again whenever the computer says it is time but it will be on the dealer's tab not yours. If you want to keep changing every 5000 that is up to you or next oil change will be about 25,000 miles.
Use good oil and it will be fine.

I recently had my 10K service and, I too, paid for one at 5K. The dealer told me that I could have come in at 11K, but that they'd have to put it in the books as such. In other words, BMW would see that I showed up late for the service. As it was, I went in at 10,200 and I was officially 200 miles late. On the one hand, it's probably no big deal, but what if they build a case that you disregard maintainance for warranty reasons down the road. I don't think it's worth the risk. Anyway, the next free oil service is not until 25K. I'm planning to pay for one more oil change between now and then.
