Help Looking for Problems

So, I was driving along Monday, an hour and a half from home, on a really dusty road, when suddenly the Mini (2005, 75K miles) loses all power. I press the gas, the Mini just laughs at me. Suddenly all the lights on the dash come on and steam starts pouring out from under the hood. I pull over and shut everything down. After a short inspection, I can see it clearly overheated and oh, the serpentine belt broke. So, I have it towed to my house, thinking I can fix a belt...one day and four hours later, I call the tow truck and have them take it to a garage. I've not had a lot of experience with this garage, but they come recommended. They're not experienced with Minis. They replace the belt and the idler pulley. They say that the idler pulley broke and that's what made the belt break. Seems logical, as the belt didn't look worn. However, they make those replacements and give me the car back. The engine sounds very different. It groans and ticks. I get home and find its a quart low on oil. However, the Service Engine light is still on and for some reason, the traction control light is stuck on, too. I turned it off, went to the store, turned it on and off a couple times, but those lights won't go off. Some people tell me to take it back to them, but after they messed up, they're just going to charge me more, and they don't seem to know what they're doing (they also didn't do the 75K service I asked them to do and left the hood open when I went to pick it up). So I guess I'm going to take it to another shop to check things out. There's not a lot of Minis in my area, and the dealership is a couple hours away, so I'm not sure I know of any experienced Mini mechanics (Mooresville, NC, north of Charlotte). What I'm wondering from those with similar cars -- what sorts of other things might I be looking for that could be wrong? These new sounds weren't there just before the belt broke, I would have noticed. What would cause the traction light to stay on all the time? I guess I'm going to have to rely on the garage to tell me about the Service Engine light, but anyone else have similar problems that might know what things I could be looking at that broke at the same time?
