shifter rattle in 3rd gear

My shifter has begun to rattle in 3rd gear at high rpm's (5k+). This is only when I remove my hand from the shift ball. When I grip it, rattle goes away. What could this be? I have removed the boot to inspect the shifter mechanism and can't find anything wrong.

I have also noticed a rattle coming from the back of the car, seems to be the exhaust. Maybe a broken hanger? Could these be contributing to one another?

Thanks

If you are in an area where they salt the roads my guess is that the muffler hanger rusted through and let lose and the exhaust is rattling against the under side of the car. The exhaust may run close enough to the tranny to cause what you are experiencing or be holding the shifter you are preventing the drive train and engine from shaking, ever so slightly, and stopping the rattle. I would put it up on jack stands and take a look. Good luck.

Sometimes there is a vibration from my shifter at high rpm. It had developed gradually over the years, unrelated to my engine mount bushings. I kind of like it because it adds to the whole experience of running to redline.

FYI: I just looked at a the Scorpion Exhaust installed by Greasy's Garage in Worcester, MA on a 05 MCS. It was purchased from www/bavauto.com
( Bavarian Auto Sport in NH )

They cost under $550.00 and it sounds awesome. The tips are rolled angle cut and are HUGE compared to most - they barely fit in the rear cut out opening of the MCS bumper Realy fillling them out nicely.
