Please help - dash vents not working right

Hello All,

I installed the aux audio input on my 06 MC today. After reading all the walkthroughs I could find, I felt pretty confident that it would be a quick and easy job. Lo and behold, the first roadblock I ran into was getting the lower panel under the steering wheel off. It was much tighter than expected and I was worried about breaking it so long story short, I ended up under the dash looking for levers, connectors and latches and ended up messing around with some sort of control arm.

As it turns, the control arm that I messed with (I felt a little resistance when first moving and now it is completely loose) adjusts the air flow to the vents (I have the auto climate control). After some testing (by feeling for the control arm while selecting each vent option) I now find that the dash vent option no longer blows as much air as expected. If I pull the control arm downward (it's original position before I moved it) the air increases but the dash vent does nothing to move the control arm. (Note, I have never really felt much difference between the different vent options with the exception of defrost.) All other vent options actuate the control arm as expected.

My question is did I really screw something up? There was no sign of anything breaking. When I moved the control arm, the resistance was very slight at first and it had the feeling of if I were to pull on it again it was lock in its original position. The problem is it will not lock in its original position no matter what I do. I read about pressing Off and the blower Up button simultaneously to enter diagnostic mode but I am a little confused because my unit does not have an Off button - only blower Down to turn off and I cannot press both Up and Down simultaneously. It sounds like the servo/motor wants to work when selecting dash vent but the control arm remains loose. Can anyone help?

Thanks. If I can fix this I promise never to mess around with anything I am not entirely familiar with again.

Sounds like you know what you did... Just get under there and mess with it again. Not to be smart, but it sounds like you just hooked it up wrong. Short of telling a MINI tech what you did and paying an hour to undo it, you could just look at it closely ang try it again...and again. I bet you will get it right in a couple tries. I don't think there is much knowdlege out there in this area...you might find a digram in a Bently manual...
