Engine compartment colour

Does the engine compartment that is painted the same colour as the rest of the car, have a clear coat, or is it just a base coat?

Due to the lack of a glossy finish I would have to say it's just a base coat.

If you rub on it much you won't even have that. The Metallic paint really needs that clearcoat. Have seen well loved MINIs at car show with basically just primer on the shock towers.

I've had the problem when detailing the engine compartment, it doesn't take much to take the paint off. Just the agitation with a brush will do it with diluted simple green or windex
