I'm not a happy camper today. My 2003's 5 speed transmission is shot at 90,000 miles.
I bought the car with 78,000 on it. I love this car, but after only 12000 miles I'm ready to set it on fire and roll it down a hill.
I've looked into the forum and found lots of different ideas on doing a swap to the Getrag 6 speed.
Of course, there is that wonderful link from txwerks.com about replacing the weak link.
But, also, I have found threads about the cruise control not working, threads about different flywheels, etc.
I'd love to do the swap to the 6 speed, but does anyone here have an idea of cost?
Also, any links for to find the parts needed would be helpful.
It seems retrofitting a 5-speed Getrag on any pre-2005 R50 MC is just as much trouble as the 6 speed.
And I have seen mention of the input shaft not being the same size.

Anyways..if anyone can give me some help, I'd really appreciate it.

 

I have located a low milage 07- (S) 6 speed, and a 2007 non s 6 speed for sale.

Which do you recommend to replace in the 2003 R50?

 

based on realoem.com and what I know about the systems an 07 R56 or R56S will not work on your car. Look for 05 to 06 MINI Cooper S Coupe or 05 to 08 Cabrio S for the trans you need to retro fit in the R50.
