R50/53 Leaving Car On Jack Stands
Leaving Car On Jack Stands
I wish I had an EZcarlift, but I don't. ...so I have to do things the old fashioned way. Anyway, my wheels' factory powder coat job didn't last long before it was, in my opinion, ruined. In fact, I had the car two or three weeks when I went to wash my wheels and realized they weren't coming clean. Which, I think part of the problem (probably most of the problem actually) was the factory job. There were spots between the spokes, for lack of a better term, that weren't covered very well...and those were the spots having the problems. Anyway, to the point, I live in a little town (pop. 1,500) that happens to have a wheel factory. Being a small town and all, they'll powder coat my wheels pretty darn cheap. ($20 a wheel!!!) Well, there's a catch. It's a factory...not a tire shop. I need to remove my wheels and have them broke down...then take my rims to them...at the right time. They only powder coat white wheels for a short period each month. I need to take it to them during that time...at which point I'll need to wait until they get a chance to sneak it into the line up. Bottom line, my car could be on jack stands for a few days to a week. During which time, I'll be changing breaks, painting calipers, etc. Now for the question...will it hurt anything for the MINI to be resting on its jack points that long?
nabeshins' correct - but be careful to put it squarely on the jack stands and distribute the weight properly. Often if you're jacking one side you get the front up a little high, and the jackstands get put under some lateral tension - the car's kinda pushing them sideways a little rather than the force being straight up and down. Once "up" onto the 4 stands (done usually by jacking one side then the other), go back to Side One and raise the car slightly to take the tension off the jackstands, then lower. That way you're nice and even.
If you're leaving it on jackstands on asphalt and it's warm (sometimes even if it's not), the jackstands can be pushed into the asphalt. Put a board under them, or jack up on a concrete surface.
If you're jacking it onto jackstands on hard dirt, and it rains later, you may be in for a real treat!
If you have the car on jackstands and need to get somewhere in a hurry... (OK, that's a "duh", but do be sure you have enough toilet tissue in the house before disabling the car so you can't get more if you need it ...don't laugh, worse things have happened due to brain fade).
Be careful and you'll have zero issues. Good luck with the powder coat. What color? Post pics...

BlimeyCabrio has an excellent tutorial on how to put a MINI on four floor stands at http://www.blimeycabrio.com/?cat=1&paged=5

I used his method to paint the brakes and it works great. The first time jacking the other side up is a little heart stopping, but no worries. The stud has an honored place in my took kit now. Good luck with your wheels.
