If you are building a race car, I'd post this in the Competition section.

If you are not, may I offer two bits?

I went shopping for racing seats at HMS Motorsport five years ago, and got some advice that has proven wise ever since. Kudos to HMS for telling me!

They said:

1. get the Schroff 4 point harness - it will locate you in the stock seat
2. you will spend a few hundred miles in a competition setting, and tens of thousands on the street
3. the racing seats are designed for lightness, not comfort and not durability
4. the racing seats are non adjustable
5. the racing seat bolsters will make entering and exiting the car a bit more awkward, and you will wear the lining and padding out if you put them in a daily driver

So I took their advice and put in the harness.

With the harness I am quite comfortable with competition loads on the car (meaning > 1g lateral) and the stock seats have remained in good condition, and comfortable, and adjustable!

Just two bits - your view or experiences might be quite different.

Cheers,

Charlie

Having lived with a racing seat (Sparco Evo) for several years, I can say this is generally good advice. I wore through the door-side bolster cover of mine and had to replace it after a couple of years. I actually found it very comfortable once I got it dialed in and did not miss being able to change the angle of the back.

Right. If it's not a race car, you don't want race seats.

You could get more aggressive street seats, like these:

Sparco Milano Prestige, over $1,500 per seat though.

Interesting that you post this yesterday, after I fought all of Friday night with my driver's seat. It decided to stay locked in the fully reclined position. I found the several threads and tricks here to fix it but... It had been sketchy before and I think the track day last weekend and the tension from the Schroth harnesses did it in. Now it makes some ugly sounds and moves freely through about 1/4 of the range of travel.

It's $212 for the part ($274 at the dealer) and $22 shipping. That's not too far from a one of the economy/affordable seats from Sparco or Corbeau. Sparco has the new R100 out with an MSRP of $289 each. You'll have another $100, give or take, in sliders, brackets, etc. but overall, that's pretty reasonable. Corbeau A4's are available from a number of vendors for $640/pair plus mounting hardware, if needed. Both are available in blue or with blue trim. Whether that'll "match" or not is a different story. The economy seats aren't going to be leather and they're a good 10 pounds heavier than the better seats.

I'd agree with the earlier posts in that, unless you're building a true race car, you want a "tuning" seat, that being a recliner. Fixed seats are a pain in daily driver, especially one with a back seat that gets used occasionally.

eBay and Craiglist also yield some good deals. It's not too hard to find new or newly new seats at a substantial discount. I've got a couple of options I'm looking at within 2-3 hours from me which would save me the $75 each or so in shipping.
