R50/53 Large Tire Sizes
might be the 225 dimension (although not everyone's 225 is the same)
i run 225/45-15 on a lowered Mini, and the rub is at 10 and 2 on the plastic wheel well trim under compression - outer tread shoulder to inner trim edge
in my case the rub never causes contact between the sheet metal and the outer edge of the tread, but I have "self adjusted" the clearance on the plastic as intermittant contact has worn away the plastic on both sides
i'd be cautious - a little more or less offset on the wheel and it seems possible that you could wind up with trouble
mebbe you could measure the tread width on the 225s, compware with the 215s, and then see if your 215s allow you sufficient clearance in this area between tread outer edge and fender trim inner edge?

Thanks for the input, Charles
My dilemma is that I own 18" wheels for summer that have performed very well with Nitto Gen 215 35ZR 18 summer tires. But here in Alaska you can be a long way away from help without a spare or run flats. My Nittos may not last much longer, so I'm working on the best replacement without spending more money to change the wheel size back to 17". I'm on 17"s now with Pirelli run flat winter tires. Rich
