The ecu uses that sensor to get the outside air temp for its calculations for various engine parameters. Putting it in the intake box would cause a reported to actual temperature differential that would adversely affect the system.
My air temp sensor is just pushed up inside my bumper housing because the Aero grill I got had no mounting position for it.
I was wondering if anyone ever re-routed it by separating it from it's fastening points in the body of the car and brought the wire and sensor up to and inside their CAI Box....temps inside box would register on the Tachometer then

I did it back when I was testing a Pipercross CAI. I had no adverse issues and it confirmed my suspicions that the air entering the filter was ambient as it was all coming from the cowl area anyway.

I have a temp probe inside my Dinan(plastic composite) box...cruising at any speed my temps are a few decimal points within ambient, as opposed to your 5-6 degrees with the Alta box.
Will either of notice that 5-6 degrees?... No.
I will try to log the temps such as you did...
"* In 65 degree weather after driving for 1 hour and then parking the MINI. After 30 minutes of sitting, temps in the box rose to 121 degrees f. At that temp, the CAI would not be cooled down to optimum operating temps until after being on the highway for about 20 minutes...."
...to compare.
Take care Dave.

Broke off the ambient sensor, in an aggressive cone eating incident, last year.
No sensor = 125F ambient reading.
I suspect it is running a little lean all the time.
Cold starting is slow and gurgly for the first 5-10 seconds.
only 5 min break between 9 runs Sunday, and after 6 runs the car was really lean in grid -sounded almost like misfiring, even after spraying the radiator and intercooler (intercooler was below 90F). I suppose the "125F" ambient was making it go lean on the moderate radiator temp.
Need to replace the sensor.
