Hey All,

What do you think the going insurance rate would be on a 2004 Mini Cooper. I am 27 and live in Philadelphia, PA with a clean driving record. Is there anyone else out there who live in PA or a big city that could give me a rough estimate??

35, married, Chester County resident, a little more than $600/year ... with decent coverages and $500 deductible. (As a contrast, that's actually about $100 a year CHEAPER than the same coverage on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee???? ).

But I'm afraid that number might double in Philly.

Al, it's all about your zip code. I live in Boston, a city that is notorious for car theft, but because my address places me half a block into the separate town of Brookline (very wealthy, swanky, elitist town), my policy last year was only $900. Obviously my clean driving record helps as well. I'm also 27, by the way.

You should be able to get free estimates from the major carriers by calling them up. Overall the Cooper seems to have similar insurance premiums to other small cars, like Civics. Even though the car is a huge blast to drive, it's saving features when it comes to insurance are: four cylinders, four seats.

I'm not sure how exactly insurance cos rate cars themselves. Cost to fix, rate of theft etc. But our VW Beetle was about 10-20% more to insure. Like I said, why a 5 Y/O Jeep would be MORE to insure than a brand new Mini, I can't fathom, but that's the way the game is played..

I have State Farm, 30 years old, Las Vegas Nevada, 1 ticket. Here are
the numbers I've been quoted with a $250 deductible and fully loaded
on uninsured, medical and all the rest on these 3 cars:

MCS $1500 per year
RSX $1400 per year
GTI $1350 per year

Insurance is based on an IGR # or something like that, basically the
faster the car the higher the rates or so I'm told by my agent.

My 1993 Lexus LS400 costs the same as my 2003 MINI Cooper under AAA (Automobile Club of So Cal), about $1,200 each. I'm 33, married, both cars are garaged, no points or tickets or accidents. That's with a $500 deductible too! I live in Los Angeles, CA.

Here in Boulder, CO, for full coverage and $500 deductibe I pay approx $600/year on my MCS. That is with Geico and having a second car that my wife is primary driver, a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder. Incidentally, the Pathfinder is $700+/year. This is each no tickets/no accidents, married, both early 30's.

The agents told me it was highly influenced by cost to fix, which really hasn't been determined as MINI hasn't been out too long, therefore there is not a large database of claims. So it could go up or down. But when I was buying, it was always less than the Toyota Matrix XRS (performance package) and Subaru WRX Incidentally, I'm glad I didn't get either of them!

One thing that made a difference was theft protection. Make sure to note that MCS and MC have a coded key and cannot be hotwired (so they claim). To Geico, that was the same savings as having an alarm system.

Man....all of your rates sound great compared to Philly!! I got a few quotes and could you believe that some companies wanted $6500 for the year??? They are out of thier minds!! I did manage to get a quote for $1667.00 with $250 deductable though. I am 2 steps away from getting my Mini. I am getting a pure silver/black roof CVT with all 3 packages for a total cost of $23,800 including delivery from NY to Philly!!! They are gonna deliver it right to my house!! I will be sure to have the camera out that day and take pics of my Mini being unloaded off of the truck and post them on here!!!! I am so excited!!!

Dude,

Glad to hear you've worked something out for the car you want. Sounds like you went with Mini of the Hamptons. Keep us all posted.

As for insurance, yikes, but in the end, in Philly, sounds like you worked out a decent deal.

I like living close enough to Philly to enjoy the city from time-to-time, but yikes you really do get hit for the city address (that plus wage tax and all).

Glad it's working out,

Kev

Thanks Kev,

I work for the city so unfortunately I am unable to move from the city because of residency requirements. I live on the very edge of the city, and if I lived in the next town over i would only be paying about $900 to $1000 a year for full coverage! Oh well, that is the breaks!

Yes, I went with Mini of the Hamptons!! Thanks for the advice. I am dealing with Mike Dito and he has been great so far. I sign my loan today and my new insurance policy! Then he is going to send the paper work to me overnight. Once it gets back to him and he finishes it...my car will be shipped to my door!!! I went with the silver/black roof 2004 Mini CVT with all 3 packages!! I am so excited. i will have the camera ready for when the truck comes to my house to deliver the car!! I want to take pics of the car being unloaded from the truck and post them on here!!

i live in Atlanta, a city has the craziest driver. been in US for 2 years now. had a hit and run last year which was not very "bad" but still.
Got my camry and MINI full coverage but without medi cover and 1000 deduc. got a quote for 1000+ changes for 12 months.

it is a miracle for me, never believe this could happen to me. i think it is cheap enough, BTW i was 23 when i got the quote. i turn 24 two weeks ago.

Al,

I'm 33, married male, homeowner, no accidents or tickets EVER (knock on wood) I live in Northern New Jersey about 25 miles Northwest of New York City. I have a $500 deductible on all my cars.

My insurance for the year on the cars I own.

2003 MCS $888 per year (I think this is real cheap compared to the others)
2003 BMW M3 $1,900 per year
2002 Corvette Z06 $1,600 per year

My wife drives a 2003 Lexus Rx300 (she has a perfect driving record too)
$1,000 per year

Hope that helps. Good Luck!!!

Al,

I too bought my new MCS from Mini of the Hamptons. I dealt with Joan. They were great. I just took delivery two weeks ago.

I'm 34, male, clean record (knock on wood), and with full coverage and $250 deductible, my insurance will be $700-750 a year. Don't know the exact amount, I pick up the car on Saturday!

Regarding high Jeep premiums ...

I had a college roommate whose father was an insurance adjuster. My roommate said there were two vehicles she would never use, a Jeep and a motorcycle. I guess Jeeps, like motorcycles, don't have high accident survivability numbers, compared to other cars.

Full coverage on a $20k motorcycle in PA for an experienced rider is about $150-200/year. So I guess survivability doesn't have a thing to do with it, eh? Actually, the insurance company doesn't care if you live or not, they care how much damage you do to someone else (and motorcycles typically don't cause nearly as much damage as a car).

The other things that I believe are major factors are:

1. Your location
2. Your driving history
3. The vehicle's theft rating and repairability.

If the vehicle tends to crumble too quickly in an accident and/or it is popular for theft (I know the Jeep fits the second category) then they're going to try to jack you more on rates.

But still, if the blue-book on my 5 year old Jeep has dropped to less than 10k... my insurance company has a lot less on the line with my Jeep than with my $25k Mini... shouldn't the rates reflect that a LITTLE

I guess I'm lucky because I have three cars under me and I live in So-Cal too. I am under AllState.

1. 1991 Honda Accord
2. 2002 Merc Benz C240
3. 2002 MINI

I'm 37, married, two cars are garaged, no points or tickets or accidents. That's with a $500 deductible and I only pay $2,400 a year. Don't know if that is high or not but I did try to check with other compay and they wanted like $3,000 to $4,500 for one year.

Feel lucky, I live in Michigan (perhaps one of the highest states for car insurance
in the U.S.). As I get ready for my MCS, insurance shopping abounds-
Good credit, 25, garaged, no claims/accidents/points. Ritzy Bloomfield Hills. For a 2004 MCS, under my name $2400/yr, even under my parents still like $1,850/yr. $500 deductable, medium coverage... That was the lowest figure (Progressive), Highest was State Farm @ $2,900/yr

More revlevant, my friend in Pittsburg pays $1700/yr. with full coverage ($250 deductable), for a 2003 VW GTI. Has one ticket, 10 over speed limit.

I'm picking up my MINI today and have insurance in Memphis, TN for $780. Interestingly, my insurance company has listed my car as a BMW . What are your MINIs listed as? MINI or BMW? And do you think that is problematic. A real stupid cop may think I don't have proper insurance if he looks at my card- then again, the VIN is listed correctly.

Well I have been considering a MCS and am paying for everything by myself (I am only 17), as for the moment I am driving a 1987 toyota pickup, Insurance is $955 a year, and that is just liability, Clean Driving record, How bad do you think for me (I dont think I even want to know). At the moment I am with State farm (I live in Montgomery, Alabama)

I am an insurance agent in central IL. When we ordered HOTWLZ our dealer said we would get big discounts because of how safe the mini is. #1 rule, do NOT believe dealers when it comes to insurance...any dealer. They have no clue about insurance. The mini has a comparable rate to just about anything else out there right now. Of course it depends on your location, age, driving record. Don't expect big discounts, it won't happen but it's also not overly expensive.

One thing I can warn you about up front, *Avoid AllState!!!*

As for my current insurance, I'm a 57yr. male, in the S.F. Bay Area, with one minor accident (no traffic citation) about 3 yr.s ago on my bike. I'm married, and have multiple cars insured with Farmers Ins. They're not the cheapest, but I've gotten pretty good service from them.

I currently pay $722/yr. for full coverage with $120 comprehensive deductable, and $500 collision deductable.
