A question for all you U.S. MINI owners...
I'm currently waiting for a late October delivery of a dark silver/white MCS from my local dealer here in Mexico City. What I'm wondering is if i'm gonna get a 2002 or 2003 model.
Amazingly enough, the dealer claims not to know what model year I'm getting, saying only that, according to his data base, as of september 5th, the car had not yet been assigned a VIN number, which I assume means it had not yet finished production (although it may have begun production in late August, which may or may not affect the model year, i guess..)
I'll probably have to take this up with the BMW corporate offices here in Mexico since my dealer seems to be rather clueless, but in the meantime I would like to know just as a reference, when do the 2003's arrive at U.S. dealerships? (I'm assuming that cars on the lot in September are still 2002's.) I imagine that it takes about as long to travel from Oxford to Mexican or U.S. ports.
Anyway, any info you guys might have would be very helpful!
Thanks!
- Motorin' Mexican (soon)

Your MINI receives a VIN BEFORE it is built. So you will have a 2003 build.

I'm pretty sure that the model year change was on Sept. 1. Mine started production on Sept. 6, ended on Sept. 12 and it is a 2003. (It's currently sitting on board the Aida, waiting to leave the Southhampton port.) I didn't get a VIN until production started.

Yes, I called MINIUSA to check on the status. Actually, I was calling just to verify the options and trim choices I had made, since they don't show up on the owner's lounge. I was kind of surprised when the person I was speaking to told me that production was finished.

You can also go to the Wallenius Wilhelmsen website and use the last seven digits of your VIN to track the booking and loading of your car onto a ship.
