In general, if your state requires a front plate, then you are required to display the proper plates.

If your state does not require a front plate, euro plates are acceptable.

I don't think any states allow you to make your own rear plate.

I wonder if Europeans with American cars think it is really cool to get US style plates?

When I was in Europe I did not see any US plates. I think it might be illegal to display them on your car.

In Hawaii you need to display a legal US plate on the front. Some owners choose to display nothing, or the dealer plate showing only a logo, or a euro vanity plate. It is possible to be cited for this. I have observed up to 50% of Mercedes Benz owners here do not display any legal front plate. Ridiculous.

I couldn't fit my front plate on the car because of the eurospec front bumper. I did have a custom europlate made with my actual number onit. When I got pulled over and showed the officer that it was indeed my actual washinton number he was a bit dismayed. I didn't end up getting a ticket and I haven't had any probs around here since.

I believe in Europe most countries require 2 plates. I did the Euro plate for 2 reasons.

1: It's a Mini, thus an English car.

2: I had 15 characters to work with.
