R50/53 What should not suck about a Mini...
My 06 civic was pure crap, the interior was falling apart after 6 months, they have a 3rd gear problem, they have a steering issue, oh and they float all over the highway, that was my first and last honda.....oh and my prius, they wanted 8K for the battery, LOL you can keep both.... and yes every car has issues....
I spend a lot more money on my old E36 M3 than my MCS, a lot more.
IMO: The Mini is worth every penny, money spend on repairs, money save on the resale value. Mini really has a good re sale value comparing to those Civic, camry, accord, etc.

One thing you should put in to your equation of reliability is how hard the car is driven. I dont know many Camrys, Accords, Civics, or just about any car like that are driven as hard as most of the MINIs I know. I also suppose that its a little dose of reality that comes along with the MINI
And you're spot on with the MINI resale value. That's the one thing I keep reminding myself when issues arise.
