R50/53 The Bad, the Good, and the Ugly
The Bad, the Good, and the Ugly
My Hyper Blue/Black 05 MCS has 3000 miles or warranty left. I have owned it a few months.
THE BAD: Recently, it started having a no-start issue. Turn the key 7 times, and it might start once. The other 6 times, everything is normal and strong, but no starter action.
THE GOOD: Roadside assistance offered to jump it, then to carry it 110 miles to the dealer. They found a bad neutral safety switch and EWS, and corrected that. They also did a thorough inspection and found a leaking thermostat and repaired that. (Thanks, guys, that was above and beyond.) Then Roadside brought it back all cleaned up. Nice!
THE UGLY: It did the same thing (no-start) on the first day I drove it, and I couldn't get it to start at all the next day. Roadside took it back, but the tech couldn't duplicate the problem. I don't want it back until it starts reliably. I miss my Mini!

You should really get your dealer to look at the starting issue. However, there is a theory that if you don't turn the car on right you can have all sorts of electrical gremlins. The theory seems to be that you need to turn the car on (not start), and let the car settle down a bit before you actually crank the engine. I'd always turn the key on, wait for the lights to settle down (some come on, some go off), then crank. I never had any starting trouble.
Of course there are lots of other things that can cause starting problems.

Thanks for the reply. I looked in the manual for any suggestions like that, and didn't see anything. It makes sense, though. The car is at the dealer now, and will stay there until they duplicate the problem and fix it. I may call them and ask them to try starting it like I do without the pause. I unlearned doing the pause when I stopped driving my diesel.
i hope u get yr problem solved.. mine has only 5,000 miles left on warranty and so far nothing is wrong...BUT not to jinx it, i would rather have problem within warranty period so they will fix it for free versus i pay myself...
