R50/53 Remote Key battery
Remote Key battery
Hello Everyone - Newbie to this forum, but not to Minis. Apologies in advance since likely my question has been asked and answered before in this forum. Have a 2005 MCS, which came with 2 identical remote keys. Recently the remote functions on one of the keys stopped working, even after several attempts to recharge by using that key to operate the car.
The local dealer here tells me that I can get the rechargable battery replaced for $5-$10, rather than pay $180 odd to get the key replaced. However upon close inspection, I don't see how to "open" the key to get to the battery. I read recently on this forum to "saw" the key in question. Could someone with prior experience of this sort advice that this is in fact the correct way to proceed. If so, am I sawing the hard plastic head of the key in half - as in along the length of the key, parallel to the cut surface?
Just to be sure, attached is a photo of the key in question.

Many thanks in advance.

I opened up my BMW key (same design) with an x-acto knife. Go slow and watch out for your fingers...
I would not use JB Weld as it is grey and would not look too good. Use clear epoxy or even modelers (plastic) glue. I cannot remember, but the battery is most likely soldered in place. I opened my key for other reasons than the battery, so I did not pay much attention to it. But you may have to get creative with installing the new battery if you cannot find one with tabs.
