R50/53 Useful MINI Trivia: tips & tricks you always wanted to know
Thanks Greatbear, I was wondering what the third battery cable was for. B.T.W. Here's a pic of that 200A fuse. It's inside the yellow box next to the battery on 'S' models only. The little wire at the top is my addition for a retrofitted rear power outlet.

>>Bisch,

>>You're not using the brake pedal at the same time, are you?

Nope. I did find that in a straight line, the e-brake will lock up. However, The moment I try to slide the rear end out....d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-. It's really buggin' me.
And yes, the DSC is off...
Oh, and if I yank any harder, something (cable) will break/stretch.

>>Is there a way to turn off the heat in the outside rear view mirrors? Or do I have a problem? I just noticed the other day when I accidentally touched one that they were both hot and I don't think it was because it was 90 plus degrees outside. It never occurred to me that they would be perpetually on. Thanks.
>>(in deference to WW, no smileys from me)
Carefully pry off the mirror glass with a flathead screwdriver, and disconnect the wires from the mirror, they just pull off (I found out the hard way when I hi an orange barrel and lost the glass out of my mirror,
). Problem is that they won't turn back on unless you reconnect 'em. Be sure to cover the ends with electrical tape so as not to cause a short.

>>>>The E-brake will lock up the rear wheels really nicely if yanked. No need to worry about the ABS.
>>
>>
>>Nope...not in my '03 MCS. Whenever I yank the e-brake I get the ABS duh-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d. I have looked pretty silly a few times when I yank it to swing the back end around, only to get the d-dd-d--d-d-d-d-d and a big wide sweeping turn
>>I have been tossin around front wheel drive cars my whole life, so it's not a matter of skill.
Turn off your ASC/DSC... I have an '03 S and do 180s all the time with the e-brake.

I have a July03 MCS and the unlock button on the key, if held down, opens the windows and sunroof. But the unlock toggle switch on the dash does not.
For the people who indicate this works, does it do it with the engine off or on?
I also noted the post which says the doors must be shut.... Hmmmmm

Guys....I'm not stupid  It is OFF. (light lit). It will lock up in a staight line only. When I try to pitch it into a turn...forget it. Maybe I have a faulty system. :???:

I just checked...mine does not do this!

>>Also, the sunroof: With the key in the accessory-only position, you have to hold the switch to open or close the glass. In the run position (engine running or not) it will auto-close or -open (one-touch).

you actually don't even need the key in the ignition...if you haven't opened the doors yet jsut poke the sunroof button and it will close on it's own...just don't open the doors or it will stop.
>>Maybe they changed this.
>>
>>In my MINI, when I drive off and the doors lock, and then stop and turn off the engine, and leave the car but do not lock it, then come back, start the car again and drive off, it will not lock the doors at 10 mph. It will only lock them (if they are unlocked) if they have been locked before starting the car again.

How fast are you going when you try it? You need pavement that's smooth, doesn't have to be wet though. I can do it pulling into our parking lot from the street at 25 mph... pull in quick, yank the wheel HARD to the right, and pull the brake. I haven't tried it going left yet. Which way do you go?

Nope. That's 'normal' behavior. I've noticed it on my car too. Also doesn't auto-lock when you've just let someone in/out without turning off the engine.
I found another hidden feature today: I usually keep the auto AC on vent to let outside air in, and don't actually use the cooling part of the AC. So my normal way to turn this on is to hit the "Auto" button, which turns on Auto, cool, and recirc. I then hit the 'cool' button (snowflake icon) to turn OFF the cool and recirc, leaving the "Auto" to bring in fresh air from outside. So I discovered today that if I've turned the vent off using the "off" end of the Auto button, I can bring it back just the way I had it, in one step, by hitting the "off" end again!

Cali Roads are not E-Brake 180 friendly unless wet.

I'm not sure if this is well known or already mentioned...
You can still roll-up the windows and close the sunroof with the key out of the ignition, if you've just shut off the car without opening the doors.
But yes. NCS Expert -- search around in the 2nd gen forum for a sticky on NCS expert -- it'll tell you all you need to know about it.
That must be the longest bump of a thread I've ever seen, a month short of 10 years is impressive.
The pushing the turn signal thing is on second generation MINIs only. There's a bunch of discussion around here about NCS expert which might be able to do that. Not sure if that's second gen either. Have a look in the electrical subforum.
