oil change

So im just wondering if local oil change places such as midas or even the gas station with a full service car wash and oil change facililty ( danny's ) would have the capability to change the oil in my mini. Such as would they have the proper oil filter? i have the capability to change my own oil, but... its really really hot out and i dont necesarily feel like doing it. What is everyones opinion?

If you have a service station that you trust, they can probably change the oil, but you'll likely have to provide the filter. But if they don't do a lot of oil changes for MINIs, they may run into problems. The filter canister is notoriously easy to cross-thread, it's easy to damage the canister O-ring during re-installation if you don't seat it and lube it properly, and on some of the earlier models, I believe there's a plastic part of some sort that sometimes comes out with the filter and is accidentally thrown away with the old filter if the tech doesn't know what he's doing.

You can order replacement filters from vendors like Minimania or Moss MINI, or I think there are also equivalent filters from other manufacturers that you can get at the local auto parts store. I just ordered a few filters from Mini Mania so I always have the next filter ready to go.

Most small shops will let you near the car during the change.

Bring your own filter and givem an education on MINI oil changes.

Also, some MINI owners change oil between scheduled intervals (15,000mi) some every 3,000 mi. ( Unnecessary that early with Synthetic - wastes oil )

That being the case, I change mine every 8,500 mi and swap out the filter housing gasket ONLY every other time.....Matter of fact, the old O ring still being pliable and pre-shaped actually re-seats itself better.

Nice thread... I've changed oil many, many times in my old VWs, Jeep, et cetera but just the prospect of dealing with the MINI filter has me slightly concerned. I'll have to look at my Bentley manual to see how well they cover this filter. Anyway, I'm only 2200 miles from my next change. About three to four weeks.
