Odd noise on startup

Ok so I looked all over the place on the forum, and I looked through all sorts of TSB's here at work.

Right after the motor kicks over I get this weird clickey screetch noise. It's not from the belt or tensioner. It's actually on the drivers side. It almost sounds like the starter is winding back off the flywheel. I didn't know it anyone else has experienced this or something like it. Any info would be appreciated b/c it's driving me insane.

It sounds like the starter bendix is not releasing fully and sliding back from the ring gear. The spring in the solenoid might be getting weak, or the bendix may be hanging up on the shaft. Have someone listen with the hood up while you start it, that may help pinpoint the prob.

That is what I think it is too. I had another tech start it while I used my handy little stethescope deal. I was mainly wondering if anyone has had this problem before and if anyone knows if a rebuild kit is available. The local parts stores here don't have a record of one.

Sounds similar to a sound I get with my 06. I've had it at Classic twice to be looked at, both times I was told they were not able to recreate the sound. I've also listened under the hood as someone else started the car, the sound is definately coming from the driver's side of the engine compartment. It only happens sometimes and it only lasts for a second or so once the engine starts. A very metalic scraping/screech type sound....

that is definitely your bendix gear. replace it quick, before you ruin your starter!
