R50/53 Reset ECU on oil change how-to?
"Inspection" vs. "Next Oil Service"
I successfully reset the reminder, but it says "INspection" now and not "Oil Service". What's up with that?
1) Oil Service
2) Inspection I
3) Oil Service
4) Inspection II
(after this point, I believe the cycle repeats itself)
To use my car as an example, when I took delivery, it was counting down to "oil service", which came due at about 12,500 miles. After that, it counted down to "Inspection I", which came due at 33,200 miles (yes, I also changed the oil myself during the 21,000 mile interval). When the service counter was reset after the Inspection I service, it started counting down to "Oil Service" again, and will likely come due for that service around 51k miles, at which point I'll reset the service counter and it will start counting down to "Oil Service" again.
On a side note, this is why I would recommend against paying for an extended service agreement if you drive a lot of freeway miles. I do a lot of interstate driving, and this stretches out the OBC-recommended service intervals so much that by the time the standard 36k mile service agreement ended, I only got through the first "Oil Service" and "Inspection I". I received a free service extension to 50k miles when I took delivery of the car, but even that agreement will likely have ended by the time I come due for the next OBC-recommended service (the second "Oil Service").

Good to know Scott! Thanks for the tip.
Next time I see you on my commute I'll be sure and give you the thumbs up; I live in Salinas, work in Monterey. I don't drive Interstates, but the trek from Salinas to Monterey can add up annually.

I actually live in Salinas and go to school in Monterey (Naval Postgraduate School). I'm sure we've passed each other on Highway 68 at least once or twice in the past year. My MINI is the Cool Blue convertible with the weird graphics and "50 STX" on the side:

I'll keep an eye out for you!

Erik, Welcome!
Scroll back up to post #18, 22 and 23. I was able to do it successfully using those instructions on my '03. I am guessing that since Post #22 is for an '05, you should be able to do the same.
Cheers.

Just to follow up on this, both quoted posts refer to exactly the same instructions. I just did this today and on my '05 the words that came up after the first step were not "Reset" but "test".
The first time I released the odo button when "test" came up but it didn't do what it was supposed to do. When I did it the second time, I waited a bit longer before releasing the button and after a while, "test" was followed by the oil service interval number, in my case -250. At this point I released the button for the first time and pressed and held it again (per the instructions) and the number started flashing. Then I released the button and pressed again and "voila" the service interval was reset, in my case to 15,500.
For the record I change my oil every 5K miles.
In summary, in my '05 the procedure was as follows:
1. Hold down the trip odometer button.
2. Insert ignition key and turn to the first position.
3. The word "test" will first appear on the odometer indicator and after a bit of time the current oil change interval will appear (e.g. 500, 2750, etc.)
4. When the number appears, release the trip button, then press & hold once more.
5. The current oil change interval number will flash.
6. Release the button, and then press & release again.
7. The Service interval is now reset.
I have no idea on what cars this will work on, but it's how it worked on mine.
Good Luck!

The sequence of services that come due are:

I have the same problem that you responded to with this quote and i dont know if i fully understand. my oil counter was at 75 when i attemted to reset, and now it says inspection at 15000, do you know how i can change this to say oil counter, or bring the oil counter back up and reset it? thanks much.
That all sounds correct to me. Let the OBC count down to the required "inspection" (which includes an oil change), and when you reset it the next time, it will start counting down to the next "oil change".
Well, it's always either counting down to "oil service" or "inspection", and both Inspection I and Inspection II include an oil change, so in effect, the OBC is always counting down to the next oil change.
