Excessive Horn Honking?!?!?!

About a year ago I was on a 2-lane on-ramp. Traffic was stop and go because there were flashing red lights to let people know when to go. Well, I was the second row of cars in when the lights just stopped. That means you can go, right? NO ONE MOVED!! People behind me (including semi's) were honking like mad trying to get the people to go. I'm just laughing at all this and decide to join in strictly for fun, not because I was pissed off or being defensive (I really wasn't!). So I let out a "bip bip bip bip bip" by tapping on the horn. As I was doing that, a police officer started WALKING down the on-ramp to direct traffic. I must have startled him because he pointed at me and SCREAMED "YOU...KNOCK IT OFF RIGHT NOW!!!" I put my hands up like "ok, ok...sorry!" and he points at me and says "YOU...OVER TO THE SIDE...NOW!!!!!" By this time, traffic starts moving. I pull off to the side. He comes to my window and says "I know I know, everyone else was honking right??? Well I picked you because you were closest to me and you were annoying me!" He hands me a ticket for $190 and walks away.

Fast forward 3 months later. I go to court to fight it saying I had every right to give a warning honk to let people know they can go. I get to the judge, and he asks if I plead guilty or not guilty. I ask if I can tell my story. He says make it quick. So I tell the story and the first time I mentioned that I was in a Mini Cooper he looks up and goes "A Mini Cooper??" I confirmed with a "Yes, sir" and continue on. Further into it he stops me again and says "Wait wait wait, all of this was done IN A MINI COOPER?!?" At this point he was laughing as well as the other law-breakers waiting to go up and plead guilty or not guilty. I said again..."yes, sir!" He wrapped it up by saying "Ok, well I'm going to go throw this out right now. NEXT".

Hey, it made my day! No fine and the judge had a sense of humor about the Mini.

HE picked ME! License/Reg/Insurance, back to his car, called it in, walked back up told me I must be one careful drive, not even a warning on the books.

The first ticket I ever got was just after coming to the US, I'd driven for 12 years in the UK without problems (apart from a warning for a tail light). I was still driving much like I did in the UK where 80-90 was normal on the motorway, the US still had a 55 limit. I saw the cop on his bike just after I'd merged onto I-280, so I slowed down to 65 and let him have that, reckoning he could write me up for something worse. I went to traffic school where people were quite shocked I'd have a ticket for 65 on 280, people usually didn't go that slow. Of course 65 is now legal on that part of 280, and people still drive as fast as they always did.

The second ticket was 2 days after we picked up MINI number 1, and it was just dumb, and I wasn't even driving the MINI. The day before I'd been driving the MINI to a conference and saw there was lots of cops pulling people over on the road outside the hotel. The next day I was driving the Civic and didn't think to slow down in time, knowing I was coming into a cop infested area. The cop was waiting at the light at the bottom of the bridge (Calaveras in Milpitas, a 6 lane divided bridge over the railway lines). I got 45 in a 35, I took online traffic school in a couple of hours, then aced the test.

The latest was after we got the first Cooper-S, but unusually I was driving the Cooper. I pulled onto the freeway and checked my mirrors, the guy on a bike didn't look like a cop so I carried on as normal. A little while later I got suspicious of the guy on the bike behind me who seemed to be tracking me, but he still didn't look like a cop (black bike, black helmet). Then he turned into a cop, with a white bike and white helmet and pulled me over. I can only speculate I looked at him while he was in the shadow of the 2 bridges on that part of the freeway. He said he was doing 75 and I was pulling away from him, and promptly wrote me up for 75 in a 65. It was less than 18 months since the previous ticket, so I just payed that one.

sound violation? that's so lame, cops need to solve real crime. (no offense) but a sound violation... next to a dump truck. wow.

i have a story similar to that actually, it is quite funny

very true, I'm glad you asked haha.

so last summer my friend and i were in his then new pontiac G6 GTP that he had just put a $6,000.00 stereo in and we were cruisin in a city and saw a group of girls in this parking lot so we had the stereo blasting as we raced into the parking lot. As we flew into the parking lot there sat a police officer who had pulled over a car already and flagged us down to park. As we sat for a half hour while he took care of the other car not only did we get away with just a sound violation warning but the embarrassment of the girls laughing at us and walking away. we didn't even get to meet them, that was the worst part. So in his car we have had 4 sound violation warnings so far.

Jeeeeshh, what do they teach in School and Drivers Ed these days ? Text messaging and How to dial and drive 101 ?

When it has not rained for some time, oils build up on the pavement surface. These oils come to the top of the water soon as it finally does rain....and what can happen did, to you.....

Your Eibach suspension actually had nothing to do with it, oil rises to the surface of water, your tires just lost traction. E=mc2.......

haha seriously, i fool around sometimes but rain?? pressure distribution people.

My first ticket was when i was 17 in a volvo 850 glt. the guy caught me doing 80 in a 65 in CT. I acknowledge i was driving to fast and promptly paid my $244 ticket with my own cash, but was SO pissed considering a then-new wrx had passed me doing at least 130 not 5 minutes prior. I can verify that too, my friend was riding pax in the wrx (driver is an absolute moron, I'm glad my friend is alive after that) I'm guess he saw the wrx go waaaayooooooo right past him, figured it was useless to try catch him, then saw a red wagon going slightly over the limit and decided i was the more sensible choice for his convenience. I HATE when cops dont do there own freaking jobs. This includes keeping right except for passing, tailgating, use of signals, driving for conditions, driving with a cell to their ear, and turning left at stop lights (I witnessed this while a cop was sitting right there. he did nothing). If cops actually had a good record of enforcing all of the law, people would pay attention more when they drive and we would be able to raise the speed limits. god i need to move to germany. sorry to rant, but i for one (and many people on this forum as ive seen) respect driving as a dangerous, attention requiring activity. Cops should act like it is, instead of pulling over a convenient choice. rant ended, continue with normal broadcast.

drift

This sounds like a completely stupid, wreckless, and idiotic thing to do, but just for the record I always check the area before i do something like this and don't do anything if there's traffic coming from either direction, and have practiced drifting and other stuff in empty parking lots, so it wasn't like I just smashed the gas and said lets see what happens
I took my dad's navigator out after hurricane Ike hit to check on my girlfriend and check out some of the damage
I went to a road that doesn't get very much use and it was the day after ( i think) anyways my friend and I were just trying to get some fun outta the drive home (4 lane road separated by a median 2 lanes of traffic each way) I had just pulled left onto it from a stop on a cross street. the only other car at the intersection was a lexus [stopped at a red light] (and they got a front row view) I slid "The Tank" (my nickname for the 3 ton nav.) almost completely sideways, I had FULL negative lock on the steering wheel and for a moment I thought it was gunna spin and I'd get the joy of a 3+ pt turn, but I just barely saved it. once the vehicle was stable I checked my mirrors (I looked around before I did this too) and I saw a red and blue flash way back in the distance. I thought I was done for. it turns out a cop was pulling someone over and had completely missed my drift

My first was 65 in a 20 (school zone). But, not like I was driving through a real school zone. School was just off of I-40 which is normally 55, but it happened to be end of school and buses were there.

Last "event" was leaving the dyno shop after Jan's TUNE!!! Me and another MINI got pulled over for "racing" that was reported by someone via 911. 5 fricken cop cars showed up. We both got a lecture then sent on our merry way. Gratefully. Seems that this sort of thing is a common occurrence where Jan goes!!!!

Funny, that same MINI today during auto-x put his car in reverse while trying to downshift from 2nd to 1st. Car came to screeching stop, tires smoking and all. I was amazed that he was able to put in in 1st and continue on.

I was a UH-1 helicopter crew chief back in the day. We had this aircraft make an emergency landing in a farmer's field about 50 miles from where I was. Checked it out, found the engine was toast. Rather than try to get the helicopter out of the field by airlift or trailer, we did a field replacement. We got it up and running on Sunday afternoon late. I had the bad engine on a stand in the back of a deuce and a half. I was tired, it was late, and I wanted to be home chillin, not working. So I put my combat boot so far into the gas pedal I think I was standing on the injection pump trying to get that deuce back to the base. I finally got on base, headed for the engine shop to get the engine off the truck and get the truck to the motor pool, still foot thru the firewall. MP pulls me over. Gives me a ticket for speeding. He says there's no money involved, but I would get to explain to my CO why I was speeding. Monday morning I get pulled out in front of my whole company by the First Shirt, who explained I had accomplished something he'd never heard of before. Speeding in a deuce and a half. The whole company applauded. I was a bit embarrassed.

Another night, after getting off second shift at midnight, I was headed home in my 64 Chevy panel truck (sorta an early Suburban). It had a bad clutch. It was Friday night, and I was all set to replace the clutch the next day. The road I was on had a speed limit of 45. Going home was a bit of an up grade. The clutch was so shot it really wasn't grabbing much at all. I was going 25 if I was lucky. Halfway home, I get the blue lights, so I pull over. The cop wants to know why I'm out so late. I tell him I just got off work and was headed home. He's shining his flashlight at me and all over the inside of the truck. He asks me if I know why he pulled me over. I said if I had to guess it was because I was driving so slow. He said yes, and why WAS I driving so slow? I told him about the clutch, and he saw the parts boxes in the truck. He just shook his head, and asked me how far I was going. I told him just a couple more miles. He followed me home with his lights flashing so nobody would hit me. Again, rather embarrassing.

I don’t remember if I paid the ticket.
Then again, I do not remember much of that week!

76 in a 35 construction zone, no workers present. Black Friday of 2 years ago in my Jetta VR6. No hurry, just speeding for the hell of it and because it was cold (like 50 in FL) and my car drives SO much nicer then. Anyways...got off with only $305.50, court appearance, and court ordered driving school.

I have tried to behave myself a little more in the Mini. And I bought a radar detector....
