Out of curiosity...any threads relating to this topic on MacAddict? I'm curious as to which boards Mini/Mac drivers are drawn to.
I'm sure there are a lot of marketing agencies that would love to get their hands on this particular demographic to analyze us.
My guess is that we have a good number of common interests/purchases:
Mini
Mac
Dwell Magazine
Readymade Magazine
Radiohead/Bjork listeners (maybe....audio tastes obviously very different from visual aesthetic tastes)
All-Clad (if you're into cooking)
Good design makes me
IMO, we are the target market.

a while back, some one was aking about getting an MCS and some people told him how they liked the car and how he should get it. he never told us whether he got it or not. i just searched for the thread and can't find it.
but in spymac, there were some people posting pictures of MC's & MC S's for a while and a lot of people responded and said how they liked MINI's

I would agree with your statements for the classic os - but for os/x i believe as a home operating system or general office it is just as good or better then any of the ones you listed. I believe that win2k is a great OS as well - but the downside being as a home or office operating system the average user will get them infected with viruses and never know about it....I believe there are several parts of the NT line of windows that could benefit from unix practices - such as file control etc.
I am a programmer by trade, some graphics work, a lot of web development, and complete general use such as web etc...there is nothing in the OS/X that leaves me wanting for more...and in fact I find it much better then the other OS's on the market for my needs....am I come from a very heavy unix and windows I hate apple's background. (I've owned my mac for about 1/2 a year).
I do agree that their hardware has been a bit behind - but they fixed that by dumping motorola and I believe now with the new 970 chips from IBM they will again be leaders in the hardware area...price is subjective - to me it was worth it...for others it may not be...personally I would love to see the chips worked out of the equation and I could go back to my old ways of building from pieces all my computers as it is cheaper and gives you exactly what you need....that said most of the pieces are interchangeble minus the board and chip...so it is very easy to upgrade hard drives, ram, graphics cards, etc.

Better a "meglomaniacal psycho to the nth degree" than a traditional corporate robot.
In all seriousness, I disagree with your characterization of Jobs as a psycho. Perfectionist, eccentric, stubborn, all seem fair, but then so does visionary, courageous, and savvy.
While I agree that the move to a true business OS was long overdue, i think its huge oversimplification to call the prior OS all style and no substance.
IMHO, this world needs a lot more Steve Jobs'.

>>Now that they have a BSD-based OS, it's easier to take them seriously, but before that, the OS was a total joke...didn't even have pre-emptive multitasking
let's remember that during the days of OS9 or before, windows also lacked this. i also dislike os9 (and earlier mac os's), but not as much as i hate windows.
btw, LP, i started a thread at MA with a poll to see how many of them like MINI's. here:

Yippee!!!
I finally got my Mac
It's a used 17 inch PowerBook G4. It is absolutely beautiful and works great. It's fast enough for me, if not faster than my PC. It's totally reliable, no crashes or program shutdowns. The large screen is great for DVD's and the computer is just a wonder integration of form and function...kinda reminds me of my MINI.

How in the world did I ever miss this thread?????
I'm practically dating my eMac.....we've been together for a year now. My other love is my MINI, but my MAC came first and hasn't needed to be serviced at all since I bought it....unlike my MINI (which by the way is still awesome.)
I work in the IT environment and granted I'm only in a support level, I see a lot of the going-ons in the office. The MACS don't need to be replaced as often, and just seem to run a whole lot better than the PC's. We got hit with a virus a month ago (infected by our CIO's home laptop....go figure) and the MAC users cruised the whole time while the PC users scrambled to fight off this Windows-based virus. I paid a lot more for my eMac than my brother who bought a Dell around the same time....the difference is, my eMac is still running great and has kept it's value unlike my brother's PC which runs like crap and is worth a whole penny now.

>>I wonder then..... is there any chance that among MINI owners, a significantly larger percentage than otherwise exists in the general population, also drive Macintosh computers?

I learned on an Apple II but am glad to leave it behind. I strongly dislike Macs. I hope that there will never be an association between them and MINI.

Here's a story from my site about the MINI/Apple connection:

There are similarities of the current line of Macs and the appeal of the MINI in their respective market niches.
I have both and very happy to keep it that way.

I can tell you that for more than seven years we have been using windows based PCs with Windows NT OS at work for standard office programs and internet access. Upgrades to more powerful Pentium CPUs along the way show under whelming results and total perfomance is dismally slow. Crashes are common and worms and viruses are normal. Our IT people are in no danger of having too little work. We also have a tiny number of Macs on the same network and they are all just fine cruising along with minimal support. At home I am always glad to use my macs which are all networked together (got a whole bunch of them running Mac OS 8.6, 9.2 and OX 10.X). No problems with performance and for doing the things I need to get done. I do all the upkeep and it is minimal.
Got a mac problem or question- go check out
xlr8yourmac.com
There is nothing like it for windows based PCs- at least nothing that I have found after much searching.
And I like that white apple logo sticker- I will search around for mine and see if I can get it on my MINI too.

Well, I don't have a MINI anymore- but I still love them. (I consider my Miata very Mac-like too. It's not about raw power and numbers, it's about pleasure.)
Mac's I do have a few. G4 DP 1.25, Powerbook 12" 1Ghz, iMac 800, iBook 466, and 3 iMacs at work.
The general theme is that Mac folk, like Mini folk, don't buy these because of the numbers or bullet points in the brochure. It's the user experience we seek.
I must admit I built a PC to play games only to find out my G4 plays the game I like most WAY better. Now the PC sit's in the corner and get's used like once a week for network play.

minihune,
If you can't find your sticker, check out redlightrunner.com. I remember seeing stickers on that site. They even have the multicolored ones. If you stick it on your car, let me know which side so we can match....then drive next to eachother one the next cruise!

Been an Apple user since the Apple IIc that saw me through graduate school. Although they both have their own strengths I will always be a Mac user - I think it is primarily what you are used to. Whether being an Mac user has anything to do with owning a Mini - who knows - I just enjoy both!
