Thanks for sharing the Corvette forum. JoeGreen and I just visited the Corvette assembly plant and museum in Bowling Green. Fascinating! If I were any good at attaching pix, I'd share Joe in front of the plant ... LN

but there is hope
in the jeep comunity we can't use the word Jeep but can jeep so all publications that wish to reference the 80" wheelbase 4X4 use jeep. We also can't buy a new grill for our jeeps in USA as Jeep doesn't make a new grill for WWII jeeps and they have made it illegal for anybody to make or show the jeep grill without paying huge royalties.
However in the case of MINI they can own the TM in all caps but can't the word. so if fought is should be used and unless they also have a TM on Mini Cooper and minicooper and MINI Cooper. they shouldn't have a problem with MCO.

if so BMW will have a hard time fighting this just like Jeep did, as jeep is in the dictionary long before Jeep tried to TM the word.

Nope. I don't have an OED, but I have the 2700-page Webster's Third New International Dictionary. In the main section of the dictionary, you go straight from to minhah (a Jewish liturgy) to miniaceous (which means having the bright red color of the iron ore minium)...
But in the 55-page addendum section at the beginning, with newfangled words like microwave and megabyte (
), mini is a noun, meaning "one that is small of its kind, as: 1. minicar 2. miniskirt 3. minicomputer.
Close, but no cigar. Of course, if Webster's etymologists REALLY knew what they were talking about, the Mini would probably be mentioned, maybe not as a definition, but at least as part of the derivation of miniskirt and minicar.
