R50/53 Anybody got a tip on installing the chrome ring for the door

My final interior chrome ring (got 'em all). The little door lock ring doesn't seem to want to stay in. The black plastic one, that comes standard, clips in, but the chrome one just slides in and doesn't seem to fit at the angle the door lock is at.
Anybody get around this?
