New MINI Owner, dealer wants to sell maint pkg?

Hi,

I just took delivery of a CPO 2005 Mini Cooper. One of the "extra" pkgs that dealer trying to sell to me is an $1800 maintainance pkg that would extend the original 3yr/36,000 miles free maint. to 6yr/100,000 miles.

Dealer sites that the regular service (oil?) costs $200-$300 while the 2 major Inspection I and II costs about $1300 a piece and over the next 3 yr service can total $5k, therefore the $1800 pkg saves money.

Sounds like a lot of $ all around. I own a 2001 BMW 330i and can do most maint such as oil/filter, air filter, cabin filter, belts, brakes. I even replaced the front lower control arms last summer myself. Is there anything special in the MINI that would justify the $1800 maint pkg?

Also, how would I reset the service indicator myself when the time comes to perform maint.?

Thanks!

IMO no, there's no reason to justify extending the service warranty unless it's (the warranty) either free, or the dealer is really close by and you have no desire to do this work yourself.
While not the easiest car to work on, there's nothing terribly exotic or special about the MINI that you can't figure out how to check and service by looking on here, or in the Bentley Manual.

MINIUSA extended my service agreement from 3/36k to 4/50k for free, but I wouldn't have paid for it otherwise. I'm glad the extra 1yr/14k was free, because at the rate I'm going, I'm not even going to get any services during that period.

My first oil change didn't come due per the OBC until 12,500, the second one won't come due until ~32k (yes, the OBC is recommending a 20k oil change interval, but I changed the oil myself at 22k). If the OBC-recommended interval is 20k again next time, that means that it won't come due for service again until 52k (after the extended service agreement has ended).

I generally don't recommend buying the extended service agreements to anyone, but since it sounds like you're comfortable doing basic maintenance, I'd say "hell no" in your case.

i wouldnt do it. you sound at least somewhat mechanically inclined, if you do the work on your bmw. i take pride and a feeling of real ownership doing all the maint. on my cooper. got 130,000 on the clock now, with no major problems. my car hasnt seen the dealership since she rolled off the lot brand new...

Don't do it, it's a waste of money that could be put towards some fun mods.

Thanks. Yeah I thought so.

There's also this road hazard warranty for 3 yr, $997. Now that's clearly crazy price. I just wasn't sure about what other maint. the MINI needs.

So was a good choice I didn't buy.
