Greatbear, I would love to witness that change in expression! You've got a hundred pounds on me, though, so I'll just have to take your word for it...

I've always had more respect for BMW than for either VW or DaimlerBenz ... those two jumped on the Reich Bandwagon right away, enthusiastically - Daimler family fortunes were happily turned over to the cause ..... but BMW had to allow themselves to be nationalized or face corporate death ... at least they held out for awhile ...

It's one of the 'oddities' of having a MINI that I have become accustomed to, and I find it endlessly entertaining. I oftentimes wish I had a camera to catch what to me looks like their cranium pentiums suddenly dividing by zero!

One of the best ones I can recall was when I came out of the local Pep Boys store and I saw a couple guys standing around looking at the car. When I clicked open the door lock and put my hand on the door handle the one guy just stared at me and said "Whoa...........dude......"

I mean, I don't mind at all talking to people curious about the car, or fielding comments. But those two guys were talking amongst themselves when I came up at about a mile a minute and they just stopped dead in their tracks! Hell, even I felt out of place as a result! It was if I growled "STFU and get away from my car!" which I would not ordinarily do!

They just slowly backed away with a strange look on their faces, and continued as I backed out and drove off. Granted, they were most likely in their late teens/early 20s, 5'8-ish and no more than 150 pounds per, but I get the same types wanting to know all about the car and ask a million questions. That time was just so... surreal!

That's why the new VW Beetle never really did caught on in Germany. Is a car with a very unfortunate legacy.

VW has their foot in their mouth with the Touareg, too - why didn't they just name it the Volkswagen Slavetrader?

I'm sorry to hear about your experiences with your MINI's. luckily, there are a lot more MINI owners who DO still have the motoring spirit

I have found with stupid people it is better not to engage them. Cars do not establish coolness or stupity. Jerks are jerks, dorks are dorks, stupidity is stupidity no matter what car they're driving!

Does that "No Smoking" sign not apply to smoking idiot VW drivers?

I just got back from Germany and I was really suprised with how few new Beetles I saw - only 2 for the 5 days I spent there - and I was doing a lot of driving. I guess the **** angle makes sense.

I do have a lot of respect for Volkswagengroup though, because most of their products are superb (new beetle nonwithstanding) - and the new direction Audi is taking is awesome.

I love peoplewatching, and I've learned to read what people are thinking pretty well, but since getting the MINI (yesterday!!!) I've gotten some strange looks... 2 girls in a Eclipse next to me on the freeway were thinking "I'm not going to look at him becuase he thinks we should be checking him/his car out, so we're not going to" - if you saw their expressions you would understand how clear this was. It was incredible becuase I would never get that look outside of the car, becuase my personality doesn't work that way - they threw all of the Steve Mcqueen coolness of the MINI onto me - very interesting...

The Japanese Auto companies dont have the cleanest past either, but that doesn't seem to hurt them at all...maybe because the japanese all deny it.

Well, yeah. I mean, WWII is the main reason Nissan went as Datsun in the US for it's first 20 some odd years over here. After all the Nissan war equipment, they didn't think the US market would want to buy a Nissan.

This thread is so funny......I hope you all got it out of your systems and drive nice. But I have to admit my own bias against YMCDs (young moron civic drivers) that ride my bumper at 80MPH when there's someone in front me.
Keep laughing, and motoring.

The fundamental irony of your story, Nomo, is that the guy getting out of the BEETLE was making remarks concerning the implied lack of speed of the MCS....

Fair enough. I cannot argue with the facts.

The only four words that I have to say are Double Decker Taco Supreme.
