Blimey, the reason I got at the eff range was that there is a strong chance that the 16k redline isnt a mechanical one, but a realistic one. If it is only turning 40% eff at 15.5k, why would you want to turn it faster?

i dont think any of the longevity issues here would have anything to do with the gearbox or accessories. the only thing im concerned with is that shaft speed on the charger, not the wear that the extra boost provides.

i'm skeptical, but not disbelieving, in the fact that if 15-23% reductions are all fine pulleys to run, that the engineers who designed the rest of the car all overlooked that. with the "regular" S cars, I'll buy the fact that they didn't want the Mini outclassing any number of other BMWs, or that they didnt want to have to move it any higher on the price scale to compensate for its performance. However, if that is the only reason the car is "detuned" from the factory, why doesn't the GP come with a 19% and 4%? Why did JCW, who at the time were not beholden to BMW, only go with what is commonly believed to be 10%?

I guess my skepticism runs the exact same vein as "If a lightened crank pulley only provides free horsepower, and doesn't hurt the motor, why didn't the factory make it that way?" a 0% cost the exact same as a 19% to make, so there has to be a reason.

But I still do wind up going back to the fact that the JCW both has a reduction and a higher rev limit that puts it over the 16k number.

Yeah, I understand your point...... but for folks who care more about maximum torque (from more boost) at 2500-4500RPM than max eff at 5000RPM and beyond... if the SC isn't going to grenade in 40K miles, then the more, the better....

If making my MINI a low-end-torque-beast comes at the small penalty of reducing SC life by, say, 20-25%, then that seems like a fair trade. Kinda like tires.... I'm perfectly happy to get 25K per set, though I know more conservative driving would get me 50K per set. I'm confident there's SOME negative impact of spinning the SC faster, even if there's not enough data to prove it... Gotta pay to play.

On the other hand, if the pulley reduces SC life by 95%, then that's a problem for me and many others... but the evidence doesn't suggest that's the case...

I just picked up a 15% - 2% combo, but after reading all the info provided, I'm not so sure if I should install them. I have only 15K on my '06 MCS so I'm still under warranty. I don't redline the engine but I drive spirited. When the time comes to buy into an extended warranty, IF I decide to keep this MINI, does the dealer do an inspection to see if it is worthy of an extended warranty? And will they not extend/honor the warranty with a different pulley?

By the way MCS1984, I just installed an Invidia exhaust and I love it!

I know this an old dead thread but to me the logical solution for all of you worried about warrenty, is to just install mods yourself. And when something blows up just put it back to stock before taking it back to the dealer.

Talk about a moldy oldey....
The problem with uninstalling mods before going to a dealer is many cannot be undone...like a pulley. Once done... It is a permanent change for all intents and purposes.
That is why this debate happend back in the day.
And today, many more folks are running 17% than ever before...very few issues...most better dealers wll overlook the pulley too.

I do congradulate you on reading up on stuff before purchase!!

I hate to bring this up, but that would be dishonest and fraudulent.

That's true, I'd like to consider myself an honest man, but I think the man gets to f#*k me over way more than I him.

So you could never put a stock pulleyback on? Is it pressed on meaning more work to put it back?

The stock pulley, could be heated, and put on..but it is almost always scarred and dammaged during the removal. Also getting the correct aighnment with a pressed puley, on the car without removing the SC would be pretty interesting...you only have a few seconds once it comes out of the oven to postion it, and install it...sideways in a confined space....on a bench maybe...if the puley was still in ok shape. Pulling a SC and reinstalling is an all day job..for a pro.
