Sorry this happened;I have never met a person who gave their car as much care as you.The car can be replaced. You are forunate to have kept your health and suffered damage to a car and your pride only.
If the insurance company wants to repair the car;find out their total costs(including a rental car during the long wait for parts),you may be better off parting out the Mini yourself, and purchasing a new one.
I'm happy you're well, there is only one Ryepile.

>>Last night I lost control of the MINI during a [getting used to my new rear anti-roll bar] drive. The car spun and crashed into a turnaround median, a few signs, over an embankment, and landed in oncoming traffic. Yes, I was speeding;
I'm just curious what time of night this occured- if it was a time of night where there were cars on the road in that "oncoming traffic"- if you want to speed and put your own life and car at risk- well ok- but I have to say I find it a little irresponsible to jeopardize the lives of people in oncoming traffic because you decided to speed while getting used to your new anti roll bar drive. As someone who lost a friend in a head on collison because a car ended up in oncoming traffic-I can only say that because we drive this fun car and the temptation is great to speed and and have fun- it should be done in places where the lives of others are not in jeopardy. Sorry for the sermon, but it just hit a nerve with me.

OUCH! That's bad Ryan. Glad you are OK. I hate to see anyone's MINI crunched, especially an April clubber.
If they total it, maybe you can keep the "remains" of MR Motor and do something really wild with him.
Glad you are OK, and we all will remember to be careful out there.

Hey Ryan! The family and I are glad you're OK. Sounds like a "totaling" would be the best thing for Mr. Motor. Quick, and painless for him. I also hope the insurance company doesn't give you any grief over the mods you'd made.
Paula totaled a car years ago. The insurance company would let her take anything out of it. You may be out-of-luck in regards to pulling out the sway bar, et al - unfortunately.
God speed in getting back up on your feet and motoring again!!

Ryan, Glad your OK!!!...Again the Mini takes a "licking" and keeps on "Ticking" Opps already taken by a watch co,,,The body damage is not all that bad, but the "hidden damage might be more than the medal,,,,The real problem is the avail of parts to fix,,Most new cars need to be any where from 60 to 75% of replacement value to be "totaled..."...which means 12 to 15K worth of damage,,,and it does not look like it will hit that figure...(if they do total, try to take the anitsway bar off BEFORE they give you the check,,(things come off easier than on,,,)..PS if theey Total it..you can order a factory WORKS S,,,help to ease the PAIN....
Sorry to hear this! Hope things work out smoothly. However, in the future please be careful what you post on the Net regarding your crash until all is finalized with the Insurance, law enforcement, etc. While we are a fine support group, and we're here for you, this is a public board - open to whoever wishes to surf in and out. Not everyone has your candor, or your best interests at heart.

I really appreciate all your very kind words.
I've been in a daze today, reflecting on the incident, what I should of done, could of done. Really, it's too late for any of that. What's done cannot be reversed, I just have to use this experience as a very hard lesson. I did come to a new concept today, however. During my spin, as I was correcting to come out of it while staying in the middle of the road, the car suddenly reverse rotation, thus vectoring towards the median. The only thing I can think of that would cause this is a piece of the passenger side suspension breaking, creating drag in that direction, causing the car to oppose my inputs. Since it was the drivers' side suspension that hit the median, if I get a chance to inspect the car again, I will be sure to look closely at the passenger side suspension for pre-impact breakage.
--->Speedy57: the incident was a bit after midnight on a road that is not traveled much at that hour. I can assure you there was nobody else on the road. However, I do understand your viewpoint, and I feel horrible at my irresponsibility, regardless of where I was and when it took place. A more accurate description of where the car ended up was the opposing traffics' shoulder, so it couldn't have been in anyone's path, thank goodness.
In any case, the direct cause for the incident was my lack of experience with the suspension modifications, which clearly change the dynamics of the car dramatically. My friend told me today; "...next time you want to experiment, do it so there isn't anything in sight!"
Thank you again for all the love, you're all awesome!

Ryan-
Glad to hear that you're OK. Sorry to hear that your MINI is trashed. Scared to think that it could have been any of us who like to dive into corners. Also: I have to agree with a couple of other posts--I would be a little nervous leaving claims of complete liability on a public forum...
Red03-
Yes. You are shameless. My S-Lites are clearly the ones that Ryan should purchase.
Everyone on MCO-
Be careful out there!

I was handed a ticket for Careless Driving, a 3-point civil infraction here in Michigan. The Police officer stated "...it's clear that you were going much faster than the speed limit by the sheer length of your skidmarks!" Essentially, that stamps it right on my forehead that it was my fault. This is why I pay insurance, so even if I make a dumb mistake, I have the priviledge to pay for it over a long period of time

Ryan,
I really appreciate your refreshing honesty. For what ever reason your driving was poor at that moment, you are man enough to say straight up that it was your fault.
I am sure you will be playing your wild ride and the preceeding moments over and over in your mind until you are satisfied that you have learned everything possible from this event. You will be a better driver as a result of this experience and the following soul searching. Life's lessons are sometimes hard but by admitting your error you will learn from this, which is better than a lot of people can do.
Good luck with insurance and your car and be safe.
For any of you who think you are better than Ryan because you haven't ever been in a accident, I suggest that you may have had your moments of driver error where lady luck bailed you out. Most experienced (older) drivers I know have a few close calls under their belts. They will freely admit that they have had some good luck behind the wheel that kept them out of a wreck. Even the best drivers can use some luck, so be kind and give Ryan a break. By his own admission, he will be paying for his mistake for some time.

>> I can't stress enough that this is MY fault; the MINI was awesome, especially in saving the nut behind the wheel.

I'm so sorry to here about this and I'm so glad your not hurt. I have done many silly things in my MINI and thought later how lucky I am I'd not hurt myself, the MCS or someone else. Hope Mr. Motor gets back up to speed soon.
To see someone admit they make an error these days is rare. I’m glad to see there are still some of us left in the world that will do just that. Bad break with the car, but two thumbs up on the honesty.

Good luck with the insurance co....
And if she is laid to rest, I hope someone in the MINI dealer network has the good business sense to come through for you with a speedy replacement. It would be a crime to see you posting on the "waiting for January" thread...

<<did you think you were going to die?
>>
It didn't cross my mind, because I do not fear death. If I am going to die, there was nothing I can do about it, so I focus my thoughts on the situation at hand. I was confident that I would just stop in the middle of the road and be on my way: shaken but not stirred.
In many aspects I've been scared to get back behind the wheel. I have lost trust in myself as a driver, however I feel it's important to "jump back on the saddle", to understand that the error is better used as a "notch in my belt" versus emotional baggage.
Cheers,
Ryan
