WOW! What a brilliant observation.
I really feel lucky that my MINI is still fun to drive, still looks great and stills gets decent gas mileage. After all, we all know that nothing will turn a good car into a POS like seeing it advertised or actually seeing more than one in public.

Hate to say it, but in some ways I agree with her. I'm not looking forward to the day when the MINI turns into the PT or Beetle and be just another dime a dozen car. I bought the MINI for the unique style and handling.....that, and I don't have a bankroll large enough to keep an original on the road. :smile: But, the uniqueness factor is going to lost once the popularity gains momentum. Right now it gives you the same kind of feeling you get when you see another rare car....what you might call the "WOW" factor. 
My only hopes are that they have a drastic body style change in the next few years (maybe they'll let the French redesign the body as well as the motor for 2005!)
or the BMW Series 1 takes off and it becomes the new car of the masses.

who cares really tho? ford mustangs are trendier then a hollywood hills credit card maxxing.
we chose these cars for reasons that vary from person to person. and the ratio of people wanting the MINI for the same reason may be a bit more then slim, but who cares?

i feel like it wont get to that.. maybe i'm just in denial. but to me seeing other minis on the road is exciting, and as long as i keep getting excited about seeing minis i wont care how many their are. as long as i love my car nothing anyone says will change that. i've actually had people tell me they don't like minis, all i say is "thats ok, i like it" my sister for instance HATES my car. just don't let it get to you.

If Ms. Schmich wants to be part of an elite "marketing free" secret society she should elect to buy an Aston Martin Vanquish with a built-in Linn audio system. Or a Ferrari, a Lamborghini, a Rolls Royce or any other ultra high-end manufacturer of automobiles that would commit suicide before advertising on something as lowly as TV. Of course, it might be a somewhat difficult to find one for under $25,000. At least MINI's marketing campaign has a sense of humor, something that the average socialist journalist type like our dear Ms. Schmich is severely lacking in.

Sorry, but bite me, Ms. Schmich. I purchased an early production 2002 Cooper and liked the car so much that I traded up to a 2003 Cooper S, so I certainly don't need your sympathy. The MINI is on it's way UP, not out. And besides, MINI is already controlling production to prevent saturation of the market, but they're not being snobbish or exclusive about it. As for your "missed MINI moment", you may want to check the last forty or so years of your life - you missed quite a bit there, too. :evil:

My friends all want to know why I want one. One girlfriend has already told me she won't ride in it. I say "who cares, you don't drive with me anywhere now!"
I loved the look of the MINI from the very first time I saw a photo on Edmunds of what was coming to the USA! I said "that's my next car" and so it is going to be!
I don't think anyone buying a car does it because it's a fad. It's not like the new summer clothes fashions! It's a car!!! Cars aren't fads!

Did most of you misinterpret the article? I think she loves the MINI, but didn't want to be seen as being trendy "They were trendsetters. And the last thing a trendsetter wants to be is trendy" I certainly don't want to be seen as trendy, I bought my MINI for what it is and what it can do, she is speaking about those MINI drivers that don't wave back and look at you like you have two heads if you manage to catch their attention. You know, the ones that bought the car just because of the attention it garners.
I'm working in Boston this week and I came out for lunch today and there were four Coopers parked out front, one on each corner
I've seen more MINIs in the past two days in Boston and Cambridge than I see in a month in CT.

Here in Miami, MINIs have become very common. I see at least 10 to 20 every single day and even 2 MINIs in the same street at the same time!
Miami is the largest MINI market in the US followed by California. We have 5 dealerships in a 75 mile radius!
I don't care about the trendiness. BMW understands the MINI very well and is controlling production to avoid market saturation, a la VW Beetle and PT Cruiser which at the end of the day are nothing but stylish econoboxes.
The MINI is in a different league and many steps above and beyond the Beetle/Cruiser market phoneys.

Yeah maybe it is but the problem is that the Beetle 1.8T came to market way too late and ditto for the convertible. For the Beetle to have been successful, VW should have done the following:
1) Keep the damn car RWD like the original
2) Give it an aircooled engine
3) Built a dedicated platform, not the smushy tuned Golf/Jetta foundation, soon to be discontinued BTW.
4) Offer the Turbo model along with the standard model as of 1998, the introductory model year.
5) Offer the cabriolet model as a follow up model in 1999, not 2003
6) Ensure excellent reliability and build quality. something that the Mexican VW Puebla plant has not been able to do in all these years.
7) Keep production numbers low to ensure resale value and exclusivity to some degree.
This car is ugly inside with a 3 mile long dashboard and cramped rear quarters.

I just put my deposit down on a 2004 MINI without ever seeing a single advert, and I have only seen one real one on the road in the six months I have known about the car. I decided I had to have one just aftere seeing that one . So whatever!!! She is a complete idiot!
