R50/53 We aren't trendy anymore
This woman needs a FACT CHECKER!!
"And then, to stomp on the corpse, the Mini showed up in "The Italian Job." Time to bury that fantasy (though only after I assembled the cardboard car)."
WHAT?
Why don't you and your sensible shoes hop into your Chevy Cavalier and go watch the Oxygen Channel.

>>Hogwash! Having been an owner of one for 8 days and driving half way across the country, it's amazing how many people ask "What is that???" They've never even seen one before....let alone let the trend go by......and here, I live in a very trendy area - Scottsdale, AZ....and they still aren't even that common around these parts.

Self-absorbed people tend to have very limited horizons. For her, anything outside of Chicago is a vast empty space marked, "Here Be Dragons."

Well shoot. I am going to start buying No-Ad EVERYTHING and wearing burlap sacks everywhere I go... Don't want to risk wearing something that might be ADVERTISED. That would mean that I was trendy and we wouldn't want that.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see why you guys are bad-mouthing this woman, it seems to me she likes the MINI. She's just echoing alot of the same sentiments that I've seen so many times in this board and the others: alot of MINI owners don't like the fact that they're no longer going weeks at a time without seeing another one. None of us wants this car to be as widespread as the VW Beetle or PT Cruiser, I pass 20 of each on my way to work every day. We like knowing that there is something special and unique about our car, but being as cool as it is it was inevitable that more people would find out about it. We are all driving billboards for this car, with all the attention and head-turns it induces. Maybe this writer didn't get her point across correctly, but she was basically saying that she wanted to get one before EVERYONE knew what it was, which was something that was on my mind when I decided to buy also, besides the awesome styling and handling of the car. I know I'm leaving myself open for attack by defending this woman, but I didn't feel all the personal attacks were justified.
MINI wasn't performing a cult-public service by manufacturing the MINI. I'm pretty sure they wanted to make some loot in the process...
I did not like the fact that she said that she feels sorry for the people that had them before because now everyone is getting them. I consider myself a fairly early recipient and I don't want her feeling sorry for me...my car rules. And it will still rule no matter how many more end up on the road. I just think her whole argument was really stupid.
Like others on here, I didnt' buy the MINI to be a trendsetter. I bought it because I LOVE IT. I dont' care about being fashionable and if someone wants to think I am trendy for what I drive, then that's their problem. And maybe I am trendy but you know what? Who cares because I still think my car is cooler than yours. (Unless you drive a MINI...and then they are about the same amount of coolness.)

And the fact that she brought in The Italian Job as a support of her arguement! She obviously didn't do her research well at all!

>> and from the people I've met at meets who own MINI's, I can't even begin to classify them as a "group," let alone trendy. It seems like it has a wide and varied following, which must have some people scratching their heads
Yeah, people who own MINI's run the Gamut, from being left-wing liberal to right-wing extremist, race car driver to sunday driver. cop to street racer. well... the only group we can be lumped into is MINI owners.

Thanks, SCoop, glad someone agrees with me. And, L.Mini, I agree with what you are saying about the reasons for buying this car, and it having nothing to do with being a trendsetter, or trendy, but I do think this may have been some people's motivation, and if it was, and they truly don't love this car like we do, I hope they've since moved on to the next trend already.

I don't understand what the problem is. "Oh my GOD, I saw a car ad." Geeze. How else are they supposed to sell them? This is a business, for pete's sake. And she should be happy that hey, at least the adverts are clever and fun and not the same old run of the mill ads we see for cars. Feel bad for the people who bought 'em just because they wanted to drive the "in thing." Don't feel bad for everyone who drives them. And hey, I'm sure there were ads for her car. Unless she rides public transit... oh, wait - they have ads too. Well, there is that bike... oh - ADS! I guess she just walks around barefoot everywhere, b/c I'm sure that she would never buy shoes that were advertised for. And I bet she orders the "ads free" edition of the newspaper she writes for. I bet she just finds the Sunday edition morally wrong wrong wrong.
So my MINI is now pase? OMG, she didn't tell me what I have to buy to replace it? I can't deal with all this stress, imagine not telling us what we need to buy next. Oh sh*t, I'm hyperventalating, quick please someone pass me some San Pelligrino, before I expire.
