R50/53 2005 / 2006 thermostats
2005 / 2006 thermostats
First off the other day I noticed a coolant leak from my cooper, so I took it in and the MINI SA told me that on the 2005 / 2006 MINI's they have noticed a trend from the factory. The built in seal on the thermostat starts to warp after a year or two causing a coolant leak. The thermostat they replaced it with rectifies the problem. I guess there is no service bulletin, so check you MINI on the back side of the block for any leaks, winter is almost here.
This was discussed in the thread below back in late October.
I had mine removed and replaced in October (2006 MC).

Thermostat housing leak
I just had it replaced in my `05 S - it leaked blue fluid on the floor.
The SA told me that Rasmussen is replacing one or two of these per day, so it's apparently a wide-spread problem.

I had my 2004 in for other things and the tech noticed an issue with the Tstat and replaced it. They said they do several a day and I did hear the SA tell another owner the same thing about her car.
So at any rate, it may be more than just 05-06 cars.
