Engine making strange noise when accelerating

Whenever I am accelerating, my 04 MC would make a low grade whooshing sound along with the normal engine noise. The sound is subtle so thats its only apparent with the windows up but its definitely there. I would say that maybe the AC compressor or that the supercharger was leaking but the sound is present regardless if the AC is on or off (I think its more apparent with the AC on) and the MC doesnt have a supercharger right? Just wondering if the sound was normal and that its something I just havent noticed before.

The MCS is supercharged. The regular Cooper isn't. But I've noticed a slight whine when accelerating between the 2800-3500 rpm range. It sounds almost like a supercharger or a turbo spooling up. I have an 03 and it's got pretty low mileage, so I'm assuming this is pretty normal.

Does it

depend on RPM or speed? RPM is engine based, speed is wind based. Hard to diagnose more than that with the info given.

hmm, maybe you should set up a camera and try and get a sound clip?

So did this sound develop over time, or did you just notice it?

I think I noticed it as normal when the AC was on but lately the sound in question is present whether the AC is on or not....shhooosshhhh (not just the rumble of gas combustion).....dependent on RPM. Sound clip wont work...the sound is too subtle to be caught on camera.

Is it possible that it may be a slight vacuum leak or even an exhaust leak?

could be a restricted I take? I know some intakes make that sound when revving into the midrange from idle.

i've been test driving some 04 mini coopers as well, and I've noticed that same problem in some of them. Is this normal? If not, is this easy to fix? The car has about 41,000 miles on it, manual transmission... and when I was test driving it, the AC was being used.

edit: Test drove another 04 MC yesterday and I hear the same "subtle sound" as the OP noted. This only happens when accelerating... it almost sounds like it's coming from the steering wheel, too. Any ideas on a fix?

If a bunch of cars are doing it, then it's probably normal....

Hello
I think my car MCS JCW 05 do the same noise, but only since I moved to a 17% pulley. It seems even that has a leak of air... Also the engine light comes on with the P1229 error, I delete the error, and not again turn on the light but the noise continues... It is like wind...

Anyone know´s what's wrong?

Best Regards and thanks

I get the same wooshing noise mines pretty loud with the windows down. I never noticed it till i had my obx headers put back on after smog and a quieter muffler put on . i thought it was for sure an exhaust leak but the muffler shop that put it on said no
It only happens boosting under engine load, so i started thinking boost leak but i'm at around 16 psi and a leak that loud would yield lower, with no codes and good looking IC boots i've moved on. Now i'm looking into the bypass valve as i used to be around 18.5 psi maybe the sound i'm hearing is air rushing pass the valve because its not fully closing anymore.
Its hard to tell where the sound is coming from because it only under load in higher rpms. Could be the after market muffler, who knows, ill figure it out though.

Any ideas?

Same sound for a base hardtop

I noticed the whooshing sound within days after I picked up my brand new MINI three weeks ago. I reviewed several threads and found the description here to be most consistent with my observation. The sound comes on whether my AC is on or off, and only above 2500 rpms. It does not seem to be coming from the engine and may have something to do with the air intake. Does anyone know if this is something I should return to the dealership for? Thanks.

I have an 2010 MCS and it whines constantly when idling and accelerating although when I turn the AC compressor kicks on and it stops only when AC is on. Anybody ever hear of this. To me it seems like a pully or serpentine belt

It may just be that you have an air bubble in the heater core, I had a turbo z years ago from Mopar that did the same exact thing and one day I did a drain and fill and bled it and boom it was gone I then sold it to a friend who did a drain and fill a while later and the noise was back I bled it and it was gone again.
