Help replacing window motor DIY

The driver side window on my '03 mini has failed. My car is no longer in warranty and the dealership has offered to pay half (becuase my sunroof motor failed last week in the OPEN position, which they replaced at no charge) if I was willing to cover the other half. They quoted my half would be $200. oouch! After reading about window failures on this forum and others, I've come to the conclusion... my passenger window will fail next.

Can anybody provide instructions on how to replace the motors? This seems like a great do it yourself project that will save my and others bundles of cash down the road.

Unfortunately you should find someone who knows what they are doing with this. If you should pull the motor away from the regulator with the cable spool attached to the motor, then you are buying a window regulator too. If you try yourself. make sure you pry the motor away from the regulator with care. 200 can turn to 300 faster than you think....

Thanks for the reply. I was hoping for something a bit more positive. Are you a mini technician?

Stuck,

Do a search on "window motor" and you will find some very useful tips on replacing this part. The Bentley Manual is also helpful, with some good diagrams. Like Healey, the Bentley Manual cautions against allowing the regulator to separate from the motor.

I'm assuming you've tried the "bang the door above the speaker" trick, right?

I have the same problem. It's about time for me to replace my motors as well... I'll have to search on NAM too I guess. I thought there was a DIY thread on here for that? I recall seeing that somewhere...
