I have a friend who is looking at an 04 MC with an automatic transmission. He had asked me if I knew of any problems that may be associated with the automatic transmission, or that year model MC all together.

The first thing that popped into my mind is all of the talk here about problems with the CVT. Not being all that knowledgable about the CVT issue orther that what I've read here, could I get a little information, please.

Are the CVTs only used on the MC models, or do the MCS models also have the CVT?

When did MINI stop using the CVT?

The MCS got an automatic in '05 - this is a true six speed, not a CVT. I believe that the MC through the 2006 models had a CVT. The 2007 MC and MCS both have a true 6 speed automatic.

 

CVT's can fail just like any other transmission. The rate of failure is open to much debate, many opinions,no facts. Mine runs fine w/45,000 miles on it.

 

my CVT runs like a champ with 77,000 miles on it. I have read a lot of bad things about the CVT but i havent had any problems yet. There are also all the owners out there who havent had any problems at all. It's really hit and miss. Try and see if you can get some kind of warranty with it.
