going on a limb here....

I would assume that there would be a "voice out" signal from the Nav to the head-unit, regardless of base stereo or H/K. You would have to use this "voice out" signal as an Aux input on an aftermarket head-unit. I can't think of any specifics right now, but I'm sure there are a few aftermarket head-unit's out there that have Aux inputs.

..of course, this is assuming that the Nav voice comes from the stereo! If it does, then the above situation is probably accurate.

Your main criteria in selecting an aftermarket head-unit would be one with an auxillary input. However, I have no idea what type of signal the Nav outputs. If it is analog, then a "pre-amp level" would be of good engineering forsight. It would be prudent to measure the output voltage to ensure it is a pre-amp level. Something between 0.5 and 5.0 VRMS is usable.

baby steps, first we have to find out how the OEM system is hooked up
Cheers,
Ryan

It's my understanding that the NAV output is roughly a line-level into the head unit. The NAV has a variable volume output into the HU, as well as the HU has a separate volume adjustment for the NAV (I know, confusing, but I sat there and messed with the settings on mine).

The HU amps are on regardless of whether the HU is powered on or not, and the NAV signal routes to the left front channel. THe audio from the NAV will mute (but not entirely) any sound currently being played through the stereo so you can hear the prompts. Interestingly, if the stereo is playing but is turned completely down, you will have background music with your NAV prompts.

I intend to replace the HU in my MCS in the not too distant future, but I want to keep the NAV voice functional. Unless the new HU has a utility AUX input that can be used like the stock HU, it would seem installing a small separate amp/speaker just for the NAV itself would make the most sense. A typical amplified communications speaker hidden below the dash would probably work just fine, the volume control for that being the setting on the NAV.

Make sense? Have you or anyone else tackled this? :???:

Sounds pretty complicated... I am talking to Wkndracer about this as he has a car audio business. Hopefully we can figure something out.
