Hello all,

I've had an interesting opportunity presented to me..... today

I recently left my postion as a GM & Director of Education for two computer training schools. Due to this move and my youngest son's latest surgery..... I've been Mr. Mom/Nurse D.....and have been home tending to my son and busy for the past few months.

Today I was offered a position as a MINI Motoring advisor......at Hassel MINI.. my local dealership here on Long Island.

Sounds like a terrific opportunity... and I'm extremely excited by this new path, that I have been so graciously presented with.

I know there are a couple of motoring advisors here on MCO (Antsmini....for one :smile, so I address this to the advisors and all the members here on MCO.

What ya think????
Any..... comments/opines/suggestions/etc...??????

Thanks in advance

Peace,
D

Hmmm...going from a HIGH TECH Director Position to MINI Sales. Might be a tough transition. But, a fun one. Being in the High Tech Bio/Web/DOD industry for 15 years in S. CAL, mini sales would be a fun change.

Good Luck

Go D GO.

I think, from your posts you are a person people would love to talk to about a MINI.

Only question to settle is level of compensation- can you live on it comfortably? If so, and if you're not considering any other line of work at present, why the heck not?!

It depends. Its not all fun and games like your MINI. There is a lot of leg work involved to get someones car out the door and when you have several deals going at once it can get stressful. Also the hours are something to consider. You have to think about the fact that somedays you will work twelve hours. On the other hand you can make some good money, get to be around MINIs all day, get to talk about MINIs all day and be on the inside scoop. Good luck with your choice!

Go for it and if you later find out it is not for you , then you will know that you have the inside track on how to really buy a car

Good luck in what ever you decide to do.

Dennis, I'm TOTALLY jealous! I've been after Motor City MINI for quite some time now to get me workin' my magic on the dance floor (I mean showroom floor, lol)

Best of luck, and keep us posted!
Cheers,
Ryan

So you're saying it's just like any other job?

If the pay is right and you think you'll enjoy it why not?

Good luck!

I'd think the decision comes down to one of whether or not you want to be a salesman...and then of course if you do, how good a salesman you are. While it may be fun to sell MINIs (at least for now), the bottom line is that you're selling. I've found that the best sales people can sell products regardless of whether or not they really care for the products. While it helps to not have an antagonistic relationship with the product/company, what's more important for long-term success (i.e., money) is the ability to understand your customer's mind and play to his/her vulnerabilities. If you can do that well, you can sell virtually anything.

I'm sure there's more to it than that...and if nothing else, it WOULD be fun to spend some time around the cars. I just wouldn't be sure that it's something you want to do for the long haul if you are not otherwise dedicated to making a life in sales.

Selling MINI's is not about playing on people's vulnerabilities - successful (wealthy and well-respected) salespeople understand what the customer wants and will find the best way to meet that need. It's about listening. It's not about mind games - it's about people. You my be successful financially playing the way you descibed above in the long run, however, you will most certainly will lose what's more important - your integrity.

well said 1Fabcooper!

Being an appreciated salesperson means you are genuinely interested in helping the customer get what is best for them, and you have the mental tools to be able to efficiently facilitate that.
There are many types of personalities in this world, and only a small percentage are suited to be a salesperson (and a good Personality Test can determine this). My father the engineer, lets just say the world is better him staying an engineer!

Cheers,
Ryan

The sales part is a no-brainer. You're talking to people who have come to you, and your selling a product which you can (most of the time!j) really believe in. The integrity part is largely up to the dealership: if they want honest salespeople and the reputation that goes w/ that position, they'll keep honest salespeople. If they're strictly a bottom line dealership, then your integrity may be sorely tested. I wouldn't want mirrors around if I started trying to push bad deals off the lot to please my boss. Selling a MINI, well, that might take a bit of honesty at times- some of the fixes for various things are still not completely up to speed. Selling used vehicles, even BMW's, again, honesty seems like a requirement to me. Anything less would rule it out for me, but that's just my bottom line.
