Tasteless Porsche 'mod'
Tasteless Porsche 'mod'
I keep seeing this Porky locally and for the life of me cannot figure out why on earth someone would bolt such a hideous wing to any car, let alone a reasonably nice Porsche.

Maybe if it is a track-toy and you run it at Le Mans, but on the street

Ya'll are so close minded. That wing will be very functional at the track, especially at the speeds that the Carerra is capable of. Now if it were a Chevrolet Aveo, I'd have to agree with the rest of you. But from the lack of rice/pimp mods (chrome dubs, stickers, body kit, wild paint job, etc.) I'd say that the car gets tracked (probably a lot). I'm sure it would be annoying to take off the wing and put it back on for each event so he probably just leaves it on.

I would also assume there would be a lot more evidence of 'track toy status' that just the wing and a set of aftermarket wheels. There is no cage in it, no harnesses, nothing to set it aside from a stocker. There is also no splitter on the front, which would tend to suggest to me that this is an aesthetic (or otherwise) modification, rather than being a pure performance related one....
maybe his son made it for him in shop class and he coudnt bring himself to take it off. maybe airplane wings come out the side and it takes off into the air. maybe a bunch of his friends said it looked awesome and so he put it on.
who knows.
its ugly

I cannot see that the wing is going to help THAT MUCH over the stock one, or even over the GT3's wing. I also cannot think of many track in SoCal that would allow the owner to get up to the kind of speeds that the wing would have a decent effect, there are few 150mph corners on any local track that I can think of, hence my 'Le Mans' suggestion.

Now that wing IS ugly and looks like nothing Ive seen from any aftermarket body kit. The lack of a cage, splitter, etc means nothing for these cars. The beauty of these cars is they come direct from the factory, ready for the track. People just drive to the track, do their DE or track day, and drive home (on the same tires) ... No need for fancy aftermarket splitters, etc. The car comes ready for the track. So it "might" see a lot of the track although not sure why a base car.
You dont need to be doing 150 to get the downforce. 997 wings are designed to pop up at around 75 mph or so and do generate downforce. They are not bling. A bigger wing will generate more downforce and make it stick more at speed way less than 150. Look at the Elise/Exige. Exige with the bigger wing sticks far better than the Elise but at the expense of top speed. They run out of breath before 150.
However, the thing here is you said it looked stock on the front. Any aero kit coming from Porsche, they usually will not sell the rear wings without the corresponding changes to the front end ... balance ...
That would leave me to believe ... this is a giant table to put your grille on while tailgaiting at the ball game

Bling baby bling to match those black aftermarket wheels

I cried laughing haha
