Honestly, IMO to get the best info from owners vs test drivers who haven't lived with it and really utilized the tranny your best bet is to check forums like Audiworld, Fourtitude/VWvortex. You'll run into all sorts of opinions like anywhere but at least there are people with long term experience in the mix (and I've seen people say that you really can't get the hang of optimizing it until you've driven it for some time).

Funny thing, the whole shifting at redline was a big issue to me, had it removed in the Dinan 3 I had, among other things with the software upgrade and all, and I was initially unhappy about the Mini's auto upshifting at redline - but you know what, it really is no thing at all. The strongest part/torquey-est (is that a word? ) of the powerband always seems to be below redline, and for street use that is never even maxed out - so in reality it really makes no difference since I'm shifting before that anyway. (The cars are geared differently so that may be the reason).

eVal- i agree that long term use is necessary to truely understand the
pro's con's of any car/tranny.

the reason why i ask about the redline shiftup is because sometimes
i hold the car in the lower gear so not to loose momentum during a
wide turn or right after a turn with an open road ahead. i would rather
have the car run into redline than it deciding for me to shift causing
me to unsettle the weight transfer, etc. the whole experience of the
fun turn.

considering the DSG can shift faster than a MT, it makes another
challenge on the throttle input when that shiftup occurs during the
turn as i may not want to have full throttle in that next gear... and
the torque ramp output is going to be quite different in the next
higher gear.

for normal driving and straightaways im already sold on the idea.

I hear ya, I keep it in the revs like that as well as well as engine brake - I just haven't needed to bounce it off the rev limiter to do it, could be because of the different gearing. In the end, the only way to really know how things will work for you,. and how you learn/adapt in new circumstances with different equipment, is to give it a go and try it for awhile

Yes, DSG will shift up at redline. I took my car to some races both AutoX and Road Atlanta and DSG perform very well. I have never experienced that DSG shift during the high speed turn. I think the computer taking your input from steering and hold the gear up until you exit the corner.

I like to drive manual, but DSG is pretty much the way to drive in the future. I think it's more fun to drive DSG on the track, because you can completely focus on the driving line and enjoy the F1 driving style....no short shifter required!!

see, now THAT is cool! that's how normal slushboxes
should be designed too for normal driving... i hate it when my civic (AT)
just shifts up during a normal turn even before i completed the turn...
then it needs to downshift back to 2nd and re-accelerate... by that
time the weight transfer is all over the place unsettling the car.

i hold the car in 2nd via the lever during the turn and dont
let it shiftup by itself until i decide when to shift. but the
problem on a civic's AT is not that... it's the torque converter.
eek.

words are nedless to say, just take one for a test-drive, you will like it. My 06 was DSG, the 07is 6MT due to extensive modding plans. It is cheaper to beef up a MT than a complex hi-tech tranny.

i tried the 3.2 DSG audi A3 and thought it was okay, but the 2.0T A3 with 6spd was way more fun to drive!!! it also felt zippier and faster even though i know it's a bit slower then the 3.2 DSG. i would pick the 6spd over DSG anyday, and i don't think i would buy a car if it was only available with DSG.
