He was fined less than $400. I guess he was in a 180 MPH zone.

But the police can suspend his license for up to 3 months. They should do that since he was not in a Ferrari

I wish we had that easy of a punishment for that kind of speeding.

oh wait... we can't go over 135 anyway... ((grumble grumble... electronic limiters... grumble grumble))

what electronic limiters? Thats only for RPMs, not top speed.

Besides, its a rolling brick through the air.

Well... you learn something new everyday. I knew the RPMs were limited to protect the engine, but I always thought the speed was controlled too so that you couldn't out run the police.

RPMs are limited. If you can crank it up in sixth but you cant because of air resistance is a killer. You need FAR, FAR more HP to go a few more MPH

Actually you need a proper final gear to go over he max speed, instead of FAR MORE hp and aerodynamics

Now back to topic, the fine is low compared to what we could have here in States, but on the other hand he has lost half of his driver license points, which is very important

Not sure if it is true or not but I was told by the local Porsche dealer that federal law requires that all cars imported into the USA must be limited to 135 mph. I do know that the Mini will do above 135 (so I've been told ).

Doesn't the JCW do 142? (or at least over 135) I'm pretty sure the top speed limit is above 135 for other cars in the states. The limit on the MINI is more aero influenced than electronic. It probably keeps insurance rates down a bit as well.

imported Audis can do 155, electronically limited, so if there is a law its higher than 135

The crime was driving a Porsche in Italia. Had it been a Ferrari, Lamborghini or Maserati our hero would have been given the keys to the city and made the sports pages, not the crime pages. Three months is not enough for this gross display of disrespect for la bella machina di Maranello, I say torch the Porker and make Mr. Telecom drive a Fiat 500 for the next decade.

What happens in Italia, stays in Italia, capeesh?

That was assuming the same gearing

Lower rear ration, yield higher top speed but the wind resistance will still win and hit a stone wall and then need ,..,. MORE POWER!

UR porsche dealer is full of it.

BMWs and Audis ARE electronically limited to 155. Porsches are NOT. If a new Porsche Boxster S says its top speed is 167, you can pretty much take it to the bank it will hit 167.

155

A 155 mph speed limiter has been a German standard for some time. That's why all Audi's, BMW's, and Mercedes-Benz cars (S, M, and AMG varients included) are all limited from the factory at 155 mph. Porsche seems to be the only major German car company I'm aware of that don't have these 155 mph limiters. I've NEVER heard of Porsche's having speed limiters from the factory and I am not aware of any US law that mandates speed limiters on any make of car.

That being said, I agree with MGCMAN, the crime was in the fact he was driving a Porsche in Italy. If it had been one of the creations from either Maranello, Sant'Agata, or Modena, they would have congratulated him and let him on his way

There is no law. Otherwise Z06 Corvettes couldnt be sold since their top speed is 197

And you can take it to the bank a Porsche will do exactly what Dr Porsche says it can do All day, all night.

Actually, I was just reading that car companies, like BMW, may limit the top speed because of liability issues with the tires. In other words, the OEM tires will be good to ... whatever ... 155. Remember, they might be out there on the autobahn cranked up for hours on end.

Porsche, on the hands, puts Z rated tires on all their S models (speeds in excess of 186)

I too read up on it a little bit and I guess it's never been a law in Germany, rather a "gentlemans agreement" made between several of the car manufacturers. This agreement was made for various reasons, one of which was the chance of tire failure.

Having played with a few Porsches in my former life (single), I remember that one of the fun things in the owner's manual was that top speed and cruising speed were always listed as the same . . . I'm working on old memory here, but seems my 71 911T was top speed and cruising speed of 129, while the old 356C was like 105. The factory expected that the car could run wide open all day. Try that in a 396 Chevelle . . . boom.

I totally agree. If Porsche says its does 171, it will do it ALL day and ALL night. Never mind your American Iron, try that in your MINI (on no ... he's flaming the MINI).

Whats more amazing is they settle into a cruising up about 130 or so (Having also had a 911 in a former life )

My favorite was a 59 sunroof coupe, 1600 damen, that would not see 100 but would run 90-95 forever. Back in the CB days, took it up the east coast from south Florida to DC as fast as I could. That was a fun trip . . .
