New body kits for the MINI coming from Japan...

I ran across this in an issue of AutoWeek and found the body kits quite...uh...interesting. Perhaps we should search and see if a MINI has been mistreated with a similar chin spoiler, exhaust tips, or rear wing

In all seriousness does any know what the idea is behind these mods (from a perspective other than performanc)?. I thought at first that the body mods were something one person did but there are lots of cars with the treatment. Seeing them I would assume this is similar to the fantasy displayed in Japanese animated movies. If anyone has more information please pass it along...its at least interesting from a cultural perspective.

weird rides...

--These are either patterned after a Japanese anime show, or they belong to bozu-zokus. Young yakuza kids who do the grunt work. They're usually very flamboyant with their cars, motorcycles and clothes.

Maybe it's something along the lines of the new EU regulations about not breaking pedestrian legs when you run over them? This way when you hit someone, you scoop them up instead!

Or maybe it's a way to rebel against the insanely tight parking spaces in Japan. By extending the kit dimensions, it gives you more "eye" room when you park?

Or maybe they are portable skate ramps for kids who don't have enough places to practice their tricks?

Wow. Seems the front spoiler is extra large so you have somewhere to drape excess garden hose attached to the front mounted rear wing coolers. Shouldn't the exhaust be routed back into the windows?

Some of the wings look like Plymouth Superbird wings used to get homogulation for NASCAR. One of those sold for like $100K at Barrett-Jackson.

oh c'mon....

would'nt you want a 'zorst like this on your mini???

or how about one coming straight out of the bonnet?

or perhaps a spoiler?

....these mods should only cost you a few bucks for the ply-wood, sticky tape and paint...what's stopping you guys???

I always knew the Japanese led the way....!

kinda off topic but did you notice that the side mirrors on most of the cars were either folded, small or didn't exist...

if only we could shave mirrors and put my rearview on the dash...

there should be something behind this. Maybe art. But still can't understand. All those Skiliners, Imprezas, cool cars, what are these?

Ahhhh man every once in a while these things pop up in threads on another board I frequent aand there was this one guy who gave us a detailed explaination of how these things came about. Mostly it was just a silly fad, somewhat rooted in anime but not as much as you'd think. I can't find that thread now though, argh.

So yeah, they get pretty wacky over there. You guys familiar with the wacky vans that they do?

And this thread used to be awesome but the pics don't work anymore :
