Who's driving less?

Segway has just came out with new batteries that can go up to 20 miles on a single charge. Many folks that have access to sidewalks on their way to work, are now parking the second car at home, and glide to work on the Segway.
A full charge when battery banks are empty is about 10 cents worth of electricty. Clean and green.

I too am a consultant, but my commutes are getting on a plane every week. So, I actually only get to drive my mini 65 miles a week... :( I am currently working in Green Bay, WI, and have a rental car, but rarely drive more than 40 miles a week...

That scooter looks like a lot of fun.. but there is no place for a treatment table, or a coffee!
I just started using my Altima again, since I can buy 87 for it.. and it definately gets better mileage so far. It must be the way I'm shifting in the MINI. I guess I need some instruction.

I used to ride my bike every day to work, summer or winter. Not in the snow or ice though. Then I got my MCS and apparently that was the end of the bike riding. What can I say, my MCS brings a smile to me every day.
My contribution to the shortages is the fact that I drive my MCS and not my old Ford F-150 pick-up. I use half the fuel or less than I used to.

Segways come in four different models. You can get the P model for about
$2995, and there are used ones for sale also. The I model costs about $4995 and I know that pays for lots of fuel, however not driving that second car, saving on parking etc....is just the ticket for some folks who hate paying the high dollar for gas.
At the rate of over $3.00 a gallon for gas, even at the I model price of $4995, it won't take long for some commuters to pay for the Segway just in what they save in gas

I did my 16-mile commute this morning in only 52 minutes on my bike!
Takes at least half an hour to drive it (longer distance + traffic). The weather was beautiful - sunny, mid-50's, crisp, gorgeous.
1. If there is a real fuel shortage crisis going on right now, then I'm doing my part to consume less and help get us through it.
2. If there is an illusion of a fuel shortage going on right now (i.e. the oil industry is just taking advantage of the tragedy to rake in more profits than ever), then I'm not helping to line anyone's pockets.

Several years ago I moved to be closer to my office to cut down on commute time. It used to take me 35 minutes to walk to work and now it takes me about 5. Most folks I know take public transit or ride bikes. A few who live far from the inner city don't own cars, but they don't have children either. One friend gave up his car and bikes all over (wearing coat and tie) and he says the money he saves can be spent on a luxurious annual vacation for his wife and him. A couple, who are also vegans (the production of meat consumes more resources than plants), had a baby and could no longer manage on bicycles. So they got a Prius. They told me they could not believe how much they drive now--to visit places out of town they had never seen before. Cars are such a convenience. I don't envision our reliance on them changing much within the next decade.
I've commuted about 71 miles by bike so far this week. I'll cross the 100-mile mark on my way home tomorrow. That works about to about $12 in gas, and the $ equation is actually even better because I'll get reimbursed around $21.00 for the mileage by my company.
I've arrived at work each day refreshed and awake, and I've effectively got an extra $33 in my pocket.
I think I'll treat myself to a pizza tomorrow as I watch the first game of the Red Sox-Yankees series.

In the meantime, I ride a Yamaha Zuma scooter or the Mini, or my Dodge diesel pickup. This is not the time to stop using gas. DRIVE YOUR SUV or people will lose their jobs.

I am not driving less, although I am driving in a more reserved fashion and I coast at every opportunity. I accelerate and cruise like I have a raw egg under my gas pedal.
Gas in Ellicott City, MD has dropped from a spiked high of 3.89 (regular) to 3.19 (reg) in three days. Will it drop below $3 per gal? I seriously hope so.

As for a fuel shortage, unless you remember even/odd days and waited in line for 4 hours, there ain't no fuel shortage. Price gouging, yes ... the value of the gasoline in storage hasnt gone up.
In any case, the more exercise you can get, your heart will thank you!
Actually, I like to drive MORE when there's a "gas" Crisis. Its kind of like a snow storm. The more it snows, the more people leave the road!
Gets all those other cars off the road so there is more open road!
Open road is GOOD road
As for oil shortages.

Well, I'll buy my first tank of $3+ gas this week. I haven't bought gas since August 28th, but I'm heading up to Burlington VT for my sister's birthday this weekend, so I'll need a tank.
In the past two weeks, I've driven 77 miles, and biked around 240.

Well, if Hurricane Rita hits the Texas Gulf coast as hard as has been predicted, you can bet a lot of refineries will be damaged and/or put out of commission. They've been evacuated as of today. Enjoy our "inexpensive" $3.XX/gallon gas. It will climb much higher soon, I fear.

Too bad I'll burn that up on my 450-mile round trip this weekend. I'll be sure to make the next $40 last...
