Gas Is Still Going UP
On one hand, I agree that it's good for Americans to gain some perspective on how much they consume, and the only way for that to happen is for them to get hit in their wallets. On the other hand, though, the extra $ is largely profit for the oil companies, and it's also a major reason why Congress (in effect) voted in favor of drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, so ultimately the negative results far outweigh the temporary "lesson" that consumers may (or may not) be learning. People's memories are so short. Now, when gas goes down to $1.90, everybody thinks it's a bargain.

i turn 24 tomorrow
when i started driving in 97, it was 80 cents/gallon in ATLanta
now it costs 2.05 (2.25 for premium for MINI)...
it's AMAZING how much it's gone up in 7 years...a 10%/year increase woulda had it at 1.60 right now...so it's going up at more than 10% a year
and yes, now we'd LOVE to see 1.80, much less 1.50/gallon
if a gas station sold gas today for 1.80, people would line up

With China as an emerging power with huge demand prices should continue to rise although today the stock market is all excited about a barrel price
drop.
Look for prices to keep going up.
Get used to it. Prices in the US have always been ridiculously low.

sorry....
I think the Fed is alone in believing that inflation has been contained for the past several years (oil and residential property must affect cost of living). While I agree that low fuel pricing in the USA has kept most drivers complacent the recent price hikes will only benefit oil companies which during the previous "oil crisis" made fortunes at the expense of every consumer and all other businesses--costing a lot of jobs. More constructive ways to increase prices would meet with too much opposition. Bring on those moose burgers!

I'm willing to pay more at the pump if it causes us to develope more Hybrid vehicles. I wish they had a hybrid mini.
I'm looking forward to $3 a gallon. Anything to push us to alternative energy sources.

That's nice...
I'm hoping you get your house insurance rates doubled next year also. I'm looking for alternative storm relief from my company.
If my MINI were completly empty,it would take 50 litres to fill it,at .93c a litre thats $46 CND,or about $ 35 U.S. for premium 91 octane:smile:.I see lots of SUVs putting in $80+ CND
, for regular gas.It costs me $50-$60 a week to go 500+ Miles,every week
.
Still not bad IMOP

Lets get real. Factor in inflation and we're probably still paying less then 20 years ago, or longer.
China added 5,000,000 vehicles to their roads last year.
British have been paying around the $5.00 mark for years.
We haven't learned a damn thing since the gas shortage of the seventies.
And yes, the oil companies will make more profits - they always do - but we still need something to prod us into alternative fuel sources.
I'm not trying to be holier-than-thou here, I certainly use my share of fossil fuels, like most americans I'm a glutton compared to the rest of the worlds people. I just don't think we should whine about it. My .02

3 bucks a gallon sucks. It was .19 whe I started driving.
Alternative fuels are a great long term goal. But for now, we need to poke more holes in the ground. Alaska too I'm afraid.
My only saving grace is that my monthly oil royalty checks are rising nicely.
SUV drivers will be crying the blues soon.
