An Automobile With Feelings

The expression "road rage" usually refers to infuriated drivers who lose control of their temper and lash out at other motorists. But what if a car could also express anger, crouching low on its wheel base and glowering with red headlights like a lion about to pounce?

Four inventors working for Toyota in Japan have won a patent (No. 6,575,593) for a car that they say can help drivers communicate better by glaring angrily at another car cutting through traffic as well as appear to cry, laugh, wink, or just look around. Complete NYT Article...

I wish my MCS could do that. Probably have Big Smile most of the time.

Wow, I don't know what to think. The inventors think it will make driving more fun and improve courtesy. given that people (other than us of course ) tend to get more aggressive when driving horsepower down a road, it could just turn into more technical equivalents of flipping the bird etc. Cure for road rage? Perhaps just upping the arms race.

Wow, what a dumb idea. How do you tell the eyebrows from the turn signals?

I think those guys should stick to Hello Kitty and electronic pets.

Ya – right. Next thing you know you’ll have to be taking it to a car shrink because somebody honked at it the wrong way.

We cannot have our cars shrink! They're already so small! Tee hee!

Looks like a Buick Roadmaster! It reminds me a bit of grilles I've seen on F-150's, or maybe Maximum Overdrive!

Now, if only the stock MINI grill could turn into this grill and the headlights turn red when some ******** cuts you off. One mad MINI.
