The A-Class was around long before the new Mini was...but I hate them...the closer competion (other than price) is the Scion Xb

http://www.forbes.com/2004/06/29/cx_dl_0629vow.html

The new A-Class range will feature seven four-cylinder engine options, including three newly developed diesel engines and one new 193-horsepower turbocharged gas engine. Mercedes said in a statement that the new range of engines will improve the A-Class' horsepower by up to 38% and torque by up to 46%, while lowering fuel consumption on the gas models by up to 10%.

Anything small enough is potential MINI competition.

Until it arrives on US shores you can't really tell from the European versions what will materialize.

The US market tends to shun the energy efficient models and go for the gusto and higher prices.

Whether the A-class will have a first class suspension to compete with the MINI remains to be seen.

I saw quite a few in europe and in the UK, many different engines. More of a commuter car. We will see.
