Tough competition! I prefer the cleaner lines of this A3.

The only things I don't like about the A3 are the new, big-*** grill, and the headlights that look like they were pirated off a first-generation Dodge Stratus.

I'm acutally pretty torn between the two when contemplating my next car. It may come down to this:

BMW reliability or Audi reliabilty?

Great looking car - even with that front grille. Love the interior. Well done Audi and congrats on having the guts to bring this to the US market (BMW are you listening?).

I'd still prefer the 50/50 weight distribution of the rear drive BMW 1 series but this looks like a nice alternative.

I was daydreaming yesterday about a N/A V6 5 door hatch (*cough* station wagon *cough*).

If only BMW would bring that incarnation of the 1-series.

Gabe, any update on when a new 3-series replacement is due and what IT may look like? (just to add something else to the mix)

It should debut worldwide late next year. Here's an excerpt of a Tom Purves note that went out to dealers Tuesday; "The new model will be previewed for the public at the Geneva Auto Show in March, and we are planning a National Dealer Meeting, including a driving experience, late April in Miami."

There's rumors that the next generation 3er wagon won't make it over here. Of course you could just go look for one of these now  BTW the Supersprint exhaust goes on soon!

BTW here are some spyshots of the next 3 series wagon (E90). Don't mind the wheels... http://www.bmw-forums.com/forum/topic10811.html

cool. Thanks for the pics.

A CPO'd 3'er touring would be nice.

I'm not so sure I like the size of the new 3. It looks a little bigger. (freakin trend to larger cars with each model).

Back to the 1-er or a DSG VR6 Quattro A3

Yeah if it was up to me I would have liked to have given the 1 series or the A3 a serious look (had they been out) but my wife loves the size of the current 3.

BTW I just noticed how similar the new Golf interior is to the A3.

I don't like that gaping maw grill design that's spreading through their line-up.

Has Audi officially announced that they would be bringing the A3 Sportback to the US? That might just be my next car.

Yes. May 2005 for North America. We all know if there is ever an RS3 we're never seeing it in North America.

Audi of America Press Release

Audi A3 Sportback

Audi is defining a new segment in the premium compact class. The A3 Sportback is characterised by the sporting elegance of a coupé and the versatility of a five-door vehicle, sophisticated technology and well-defined driving dynamics. With four and six-cylinder engines developing up to 184 kW (250 bhp), front-wheel or quattro permanent four-wheel drive and – as an option – the revolutionary DSG transmission, engine, drive train and chassis live up to the expectations raised by the sporty exterior of this five-door vehicle – driving pleasure in a new guise.

A new, extremely dynamic representative of the FSI engine family, which really brings the special qualities of the new compact Audi to the fore, is experiencing its world premiere in the A3 Sportback: the 2.0T FSI, a four-cylinder unit with turbocharger, delivers 147 kW (200 bhp). Its maximum torque of 280 Nm is available across a wide speed range from 1,800 to 5,000 rpm. As a result, the A3 2.0T FSI (with 6-speed manual gearbox) is able to complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.1 seconds, and continues on up to a top speed of 234 km/h.

The Audi A3 Sportback is deliberately going its own, new way in the compact class. It offers the emphatically sporty qualities and the athletic styling of the three-door version with which it shares its drive train, dynamic suspension and wheelbase.
At the same time – as well as two rear doors – it offers even more space and variability thanks to its tail end which is a total of 68 millimetres longer than on its three-door counterpart.

370 litres (1,120 litres with the rear seat back folded down) of space are available for transporting all kinds of sports and leisure equipment and anything else the family might need: even two golf bags can be stowed sideways in the luggage compartment. The asymmetrically folding rear seat back, a standard feature, and the optional luggage compartment and storage packages provide plentiful scope for using this space exactly to suit the personal requirements of every driver.

This also applies to the three trim line available: the Attraction model, which is packed with character, the sporty Ambition and exclusive Ambiente versions enable the customer to turn the A3 Sportback into his or her personal dream car. The large-area glass sunroof known as “open sky”, which has been developed especially for the Sportback, gives occupants a clear view of the sky and can be opened wide if required.

The first deliveries for North America are planned for May 2005.

Thanks for that info DiD. Can you point me to some more info about the Sportback? I'm interested in finding out more about the engine specs.

There's no shortage of information on any of the European Audi sites, but pricing/options there are very different.
