I think his article is spot-on. I do feel that he forgot an important point about the future of BMW. The next wave of models (starting with the next platform 7-er) MUST MUST MUST be perfect in every way; aesthetically, behind-the-wheel, technically, and overall dynamics. BMW has already hopped into their coffin, another wave of bad products will nail it shut for good.

My prediction (if they remove their head from their ***** soon): prepare for quasi-retro; simple, "back to basics" driving experience.

Ryan, I totally agree. I think BMW has and will miss a golden opportunity with the introduction of the 1 series. these cars should have been a "retro" update of the late BMW 2002 which was the car that propelled BMW to fame, specially in the US.

If they did it so successfully with MINI, why can't they do it?

The i-drive stupidity has them seriously blind I am afraid.

I've never owned a BMW so maybe I can't comment on their direction compared to where they've been, BUT, I love the new 5 series and especially the new 6! Wow, what a beautiful car!

After spending the last two years of my life fighting the electrical gremlins of an E36 M3, I believe the last thing BMW needs is to add more electrical complexity to their cars.

Great article. Although I believe in putting blame where blame is due. Not 100% of BMW's demise can be attributed to the "design and execution" done by Mr. Bangle. Regarding the new 7, I'd say the I-Drive did more to "drive" customers away then did the look of the vehicle. Many of us like to escape technology's intrusion into our lives by going for a drive. I-Drive made that not only impossible, it's frustrating complexity completely ruined the driving experience. Aesthetics aside, the 7-series demise and fall from grace had more to due with overly complex controls rather than disappointing looks.

IanF - I had an E36 also - and if you think the bugs in that thing where bad - try keeping an E32 running, HA! Can you say "Cold solder joint"
