That is nice. It looks like a real minter, or you spent tons for a restoration.

I know a guy in another forum that still thinks automotive safety peaked in the late 70's with those large Lincoln and Cadillac cars. He even said "who needs an airbag when I have a 9 foot long hood to do the job"! Unfortunately people still evaluate vehicle safety with vehicle damage/repair costs from other minor accidents. I'll gladly take a totaled vehicle that I can walk way from versus a small repair bill and weeks of physical therapy!

Both. We got it in '67, AND it costs tons to restore these days, mostly in the paint. Bare metal up.

I took a defensive driving class years ago to get my (only US) speeding ticket deferred. A man in the class I can only describe as a moron shares the following with everyone

Mornon: I don't wear a seatbelt anymore because I got bruises from the belt after my accident.
Me: Did you have to pull glass out of your forehead afterward?
Moron: No why
Me: no reason
It was all I could do not to break out laughing at him. He was thrown forward with enough force to get bruises from the seatbelt and he convinced himself that he'd rather go through the windshield next time... (I think I should add that I believe he was there for a DWI if I remember correctly)
I also think he might have said something about his brothers friends cousin who heard a story about a guy who burned to death in his car because the belt got stuck (which does actually happen say once for every million lives saved or so)

Now this is insane

Absolutely--I've gotten 2 seat belt stripes in my life (and my daughter got one), and I'd far rather walk around black and blue than be buried with my arms holding my head in my lap, sort of like this fellow >>>

Too bad we couldn't have the old non-laminated windshields specially made for non-belt wearing DWI drivers...

I wonder what year/model the VW used to be.

UPDATE: There was something about that video that didn't ring true, especially because I didn't recognize the model. Now I know why--here's the rest of the story:

Yeah, I got the seatbelt religion after being in a low speed collision and having my forehead kiss the windscreen visor, giving me a nasty welt and a crick in my neck for a couple of weeks.

I remember driving my folks' T3 when I was younger - I was always aware that my legs were scant inches away from the front of the car, but it's nice to see that they crash better than I always imagined.

My first "seatbelt stripe" was when a car, which was making a legal left turn, got hit by a guy who was rummaging through the cassettes on the floor of his car. The legal guy was pushed into my car, and T-boned me directly in the driver's side door while I was going about 60 on a highway. There were witnesses in front (looking in his rear-view mirror), behind me, sideways, etc. All agreed there was nothing I could do. My Hertz Renault spun (tells you how long ago this was!), and went backwards down an embankment, between a culvert and a tree. Amazingly there was nothing behind me except an abandoned parking area--the only one in a zillion miles. At any rate, I remember feeling the seatbelt lock while I was spinning. I got the stripe, whiplash, and sore ribs where the door punched in, but that was it.

And the funny thing is, when I went back to the Hertz office the next day, the counter agent chirped "are you returning a car?" I held up the key and said, "Yes, this is all that's left." The agent's face showed pure puzzlement before she remembered being told by the previous shift that I'd called in ("make sure you make a note of the mileage").

I always wanted to do that.
