Funny you mentioned the turbodiesel stationwagon, as I have been considering finding an early-mid 80's Mercedes turbodiesel stationwagon for highway cruising and hauling.
The passat would be ok too, but I had a 1983 Mercedes 300 turbodiesel sedan for a while and the damn thing was built like a tank, unlike some vehicles that only appear to look like a tank

ooh Dave
Reminds me of my MINI Paper-weight project:

Both pics really show of the A) crappy down-travel of each cars' suspension, and B) how stiff the structures are! MINI-off-roader? No way!

Right on the money Matt. I had a VW Passat TDI (sedan 5-spd) as the family hauler in Belgium. T-riffic mileage in the land of $3.00+ gal. diesel. Got my MCS for today's twisties, and had a heavily modified original solid front axel 4-Runner during my off-roading days in Central America. Lots of friends had Land Rovers then, especially late 1950's pickups and long wheelbase models. The Toy was their equal on all but the most difficult trails.
