The Next Boxster
Whoa! A hard-top Boxster.

Original Article from The Car Connection
Here is a first prototype of Porsche's all-new Boxster Coupe doing a few quick laps at Nürburgring. The new coupe will come on the market in 2005 in addition to the roadster, which will also feature an all-new front end with new headlights and a new rear end.
The prototype on the photos is cleverly disguised and can easily be mistaken for a 997 Turbo. However, the small triangular rear-side windows, which are taped shut, are telling it is not. The Boxster Coupe will have three large air intakes in the front skirt and wider fenders and track. Porsche is likely to make 17-inch wheels standard at last, with 18s as an option.
The affordable new coupe is going to be Porsche's entry-level model as a rival to Audi's TT V-6, the Mercedes SLK, Nissan 350Z, and Mazda's RX-8. Power for the standard version will come from a 2.7-liter engine with 240 hp; in the S version it may reach 270 to 280 hp and propel the car to an estimated top speed of 250 km/h. A 3.4-liter engine with 300 hp is also rumored.
At the time being it is not known whether Porsche will release this car or the new 997 first.

Dave, that is really nice and looks more "porschey" than the current Boxter. I guess it is the hardtop that completes the lines of the car, but I like it.
And as an interesting side note, I got the fantastic experience of driving along with a Porsche GT2 for about 20 miles yesterday. I certainly did pull over and top off my tank when he stopped for gas just to take a look. Sorry digicam batteries were dead or I would have already posted!

Alabama sounds like Colorado, where the GT2 and Turbo were actually a rarity. Here in L.A. it seems most 911's I see are GT2, Turbo, and C4S, with almost no base Carerras.
I can't help but think we're in an automotive golden age.
Look at cars like the Focus. It's a great handling car for not much money. Then there is obviously the MINI which can be a giant killer in the right situation. Lotus is bringing the Elise to U.S. shores. VW is coming out with the R32 and Audi is set to have the V6 TT with the DSG gearbox and a nice little 500 HP supercar of its own. The E60 ///M5 is going to be a 550 hp V10 with an 8300 rpm redline. We already have the new Z and the G35, the STi and the Evo, and the new TL (all pushing 300 HP). Porsche is going back to a more classic exterior with the 997 and now it sounds like the next Boxster is going to be a gem too, not to mention the Carerra GT. Ford is taking on the Ferrari Modena with the rebirth of the GT40, while Ferrari has the Enzo. Then there is Horacio Pagani and his beautiful Zonda. If that's not exotic enough, Bentley is getting ready to release the 1001 hp Veyron.

Bahhhh!
I hope this new coupe looks more like a Boxster and less like a 911. I was disappointed when the 911 got the Boxster headlights in the name of cost savings. So they're looking at ~$35K for the entry fee?
BTW, Porsche, ditch the Cayenne!

The next Boxster

The current Boxster

Differences:
Headlights are boxster specific, unlike how the current generation shares headlights with the 911
Mirrors are similar to the mirrors on the new Carerra GT
Lowerer air dam is more aggressive
The hump over the rear wheel appears to be a little more pronounced as well. This helps tie the new Boxster in more with the 550 Spyder.

Very nicely done IMO (both the new Boxster and the 997)

I like the new boxster style
.
It truly has the 911/997... feel/flavor....
My bro had an Boxter S...traded it in for a SUV... ( don't ask)...
...now has a regular boxster....The regular Boxster is a different car than the S version... I was not impressed ;(
I agree that we are at a terrific point in car manufacturing.... I'm a bit pissed that I'm 50 and not 30 though ...lol.
Timing is everything u know
Re: the Spider...
A local guy here.... has a replica..... it's terrific looking at reasonably priced starting at $30K or so.

I received a rude comment/compliment on my MINI from a grey haired gentleman in a new Porsche turbo the other day. He said "Nice Mini. It's no Porsche, but it looks like fun"
I just smiled and said "Thanks" when I really wanted to say "I'd have gotten a Porsche but I didn't want my hair to turn grey".

Nice photos! Thanks for the update, Dave! The current Boxter is definitely one fun car with supurb handling capability, thanks to its mid-engine design. With the increased hp in the new Boxter, it will surely add to the fun factor. I remember the days of the 930s (911 Turbo) with 300 hp. Now the entry level Porsche is pumping out almost as much.
After driving the 996 TT X50 for several weeks, I finally took my poor neglected MINI out for a spin. Although it's not nearly as fast, I must say that MINI is still more fun to drive than 996.
Although I feel more confident driving the 996 fast, the MINI is much easier to drive. And No, I don't have gray hair yet!

My buddy Frank Markus, the Technial Editor of Motor Trend, just got back from Road Testing the new Boxster. In short, he's totally thrilled with it, touting it's the best thing he's tested in the past decade plus. Woah, looks like I'll have to test drive one myself!
Damn the new boxter is nice. I went to the local Porsche dealer yesterday (The Collection, Miami, FL) and sat in the new Carrera's, Turbo's, etc. WOW
. They are insane.....
On a side note, i saw 2 SICK Turbo's. Completely re-done, with over 300G put into each car (not including purchase). Dyno numbers were 575hp to the rear wheels and just shy of 700hp to the rear wheels... Guy was telling me he switched rims just about every month...
