Most Rare Modern BMW in North America?
Honestly I think that the most rare modern BMW is probably the Neiman Marcus Limited Edition M6. There were only 50 sold. I cant think of any modern, non-race car, BMW that would be more rare. And now they are doing a 7 Series version, $160,000 MSRP. But buy it quick the M6 version sold out in 92 seconds.
Personally, I define a rare car as something that was made available by a manufacture or professional tuning shop (ie RUF, Dinan, Barabas) which is made in very limited quantities. I think it could be a certain version of a car which is not necessary rare, but which a special edition was made in limited quantities, like the Neiman Marcus M6. I also have a stipulation on car from tuning shops that they must be a full tune(every available engine and aero component), done at the time of purchase. So the person bough the car as a Dinan M5 or a RUF Porsche. That is just me though.
It is getting harder and harder to define what a rare car is when someone can put huge rims, an aero kit, and exhaust on his Doge Neon and then say it is a one of a kind.
Hmm... I would say the B7 is a rare BMW, but not the rarest... I saw a couple this summer and one at the dealer... And the Black color is definitely not rare because all three B7s I've seen were black....
My vote go's to the Z1.

My father-in-law is a bimmer nut, he has a E31 850i (12 cylinder) and an old bavaria (e3) as well as a z4,m5 (e39). He gave me my first bimmer, a 325e cirrusblau 5 speed. Out of all of them I know the 850i is highly sought after and the bavaria kind of gave BMW a footing here in the states.
What about the M Coupe?
While I definately can appreciate the beauty and rare-ness of M3 CSL's, Z8's, L6's, L7's, and 850i/840i's. One of the very rarest (and my personal fav) would have to be the '98-'00 (Z3) M Coupe! I love the "shooting brake" body style, kinda' like a 2 door sport wagon. Wikipedia states, if its to be believed, production numbers for the entire worldwide production run was 6318 units. That seems pretty rare to me. Even the '06-'08 (Z4) M Coupe has only sold 3640 units to date and I'm sure the $50,000 or so base price may have something to do with it.
I've always dreamed of owning an M3, no matter what year/series, but I want a '98-'00 M Coupe much more. It is just so unique looking and still pretty damn fast. I hope to find one someday in good condition when I'm able to afford an additional car.
And yea, anyone care to add anything info on the L6 and L7's of the early 90's? There sure weren't many of those built or even around anymore. They are rare in my opinion. There. My 2 cents. Cheers.

I hate the word "WHIPS" RACE TRIPPER
A true auto nut could never sellout and call his car a whip. Scheisse, you need an urban dictionary for that worlds meaning. Its a car, an auto, a machine. A whip is something used by Indiana Jones
